South Holland, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 25,878 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1848 by families of English immigrants who arrived in what is now Chicago. South Holland is located on the south side of Chicago and bordered by Addison to the east, DuPage to the north and west, and Kane to the south. The first settlers were experienced farmers who had come from northern England. They organized a school district in 1849 and built a Presbyterian church in 1850. In 1857 they became members of the American Federation of Labor (AFL). By 1870 South Holland had a normal school and two churches—the Congregationalist Christ Church and First Baptist South Holland. In 1865 David Hinsdale erected one of Chicago's first department stores, J & G Hinsdale & Co., which became one of its most successful businesses. Other early businesses included Aiken Hardware Store (1868), Flora grocery store (1870), Bickford Bros.' livery stable (1872), Prentice-Hall educational institution (1875), Boarding House restaurant (1876), Wrigley's chewing gum factory (1902) and McCormick Place meatpacking plant (1910). During World War I South Holland produced munitions for General Motors as well as food for soldiers on battlefields around the world; during World War II it made airplane parts for Boeing Corporation. In 1967 South Holland voters passed an ordinance forbidding handguns within its boundaries until after passage of a gun control law by neighboring Aurora Township; this ordinance was repealed six years later when Aurora township amended their own ordinances to allow handguns within their borders without penalty provided that they remained private citizens with no connection to any political organization or enterprise outside their township limits. However, these mills closed due to lack of demand or competition from larger industry towns located closer to transportation hubs like Chicago or Milwaukee. However things changed after World War I when Iowa Congressman John J Range landed in town on his way to campaign for president on November 3rd 1915. Range was looking for new land to expand his cattle ranch and saw opportunity in South Holland's struggling economy. He offered $10 per acre for any landowner willing to build a mill on their property - something that at that time had never happened in Illinois! Range's offer caught onto the local mind and within months over 100 people had donated their parcels of land to make way for a new mill! The townspeople quickly got started construction on what would become known as "The Plant". The Plant was unique because it functioned not just as a mill but also as a housing complex for workers – an idea that Range later adapted into Americana properties like Gracie Mansion in New York City or Applebaum Hall in Philadelphia (now called Independence Hall). It didn't take long before The Plant became one of South Holland's most important landmarks and played an important role in cultural life hereabouts (think music festivals etc.). In fact many key figures associated with early South Holland development such as postman George Stephenson (founder of British Railways), bakery owner Isaac Van Nostrand ( founder of Dunkin' Donuts) or Odd Fellows Lodge #2 have all lived someplace close by including Stephenson’s grandson Jonathan Stephenson now living near downtown Chicago!
