South Holland was known as "The Prairie Village" and "The Settlement". The first settlers in what is now South Holland arrived in 1839. A post office called South Holland was established in 1841, and soon grew into a small town with a population of around 100 people. The first school in South Holland was built in 1845. By 1860, the population had grown to over 500 people. When the American Civil War exploded in 1861, many farmers from Illinois moved to Union territory to fight for the Union cause. Some of these men decided to move their families to rural southern Cook County and establish new lives on large farms where they could raise crops and livestock for sale orexport. These pioneers were known as the "Prairie Village Refugees." In 1865, when Congress passed legislation granting voting rights to African Americans, many of these refugees settled near Waukegan IL within one mile (1 km) of their original home village! In 1893-1894 an experimental kerosene refinery by John Drysdale located just east of town produced some 50 barrels/day (3 m3/day) of gasoline for local use; this made South Holland something of a national center for fuel production during this period. World War I interrupted this activity but did not destroy it completely; kerosene continued being produced until 1942 when all operations were discontinued due to WWII rationing policies affecting all fuels save oil which remained available
