South Holland, Illinois is a small town in the northwestern corner of the state of Illinois. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. South Holland was platted in 1835 and named for John Lloyd South Holland, an American lawyer and judge who served as circuit court judge in Kane County from 1836 to 1840. The first permanent settler in what is now South Holland were two brothers, Isaac and Jacob Sloat, who arrived on a wagon train from New York City on November 15, 1836. They built a cabin near present day North Avenue and State Street. In 1840, Abraham Lincoln was born here; his father had been born here about two miles away on December 12th, 1775. In 1865–1866 (the time period covered by this paper), Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest fought his last battle at Bellefontaine Farm near present-day Morton Grove with orders to burn down all Union homes and plantations in the area including South Holland. One hundred residents died during that battle while seventy-five others were injured or taken prisoner; many of these survivors went into hiding until later life when they came out and rebuilt their lives around south holland. South Holland and neighboring Burr Ridge were consolidated into the Village of South Holland in 1876. The first post office in South Holland opened in 1869 and closed in 1939. The Village of South Holland has two churches: First Methodist Church and Second Presbyterian Church. There are also a few small businesses and a gymnasium within the village limits. In addition to agriculture being its mainstay, fishing is another important industry for the villagers; many residents enjoy catching pike and perch as well as largemouth bass, catfish, crappie, bream, sunfish, and carp riverside throughout their community calendars during summer months when water temperatures are above . A local tradition started around 1924 when Mrs. Freda Kapp donated an apple orchard east of town to be used as a picnic ground for her children’s school-sponsored picnics; it continues to this day with over 120 picnic spots located throughout town! On November 2, 1817, the first permanent settler in what is now South Holland, Illinois was John Hart. He and his family arrived on a boat from Essex County, New Jersey and landed on a small island near the mouth of the Kankakee River.Hart founded the village of Hartstown on this site in 1819. The first school was built here in 1823. The village grew rapidly, and by 1830 it had a population of about 100 people. In 1835, Hart donated land to build a college here. The first students graduated from the college in 1840.Hart died in 1851 and his wife married him two years later; they lived until their deaths in 1865 and 1870 respectively.
