South Holland is home to the University of Notre Dame and DePaul University. The town was founded in 1847 by James Mclntyre and his brothers-in-law, Michael McNamara and Daniel Moran. In 1840, John Sibley became one of South Holland's first residents when he moved from Terre Haute, Indiana. Sibley worked as a farmhand and carpenter before moving into business ownership in 1850. His successful businesses included an harness shop and grain elevator that still stands today. Sibley was also an early leader in developing South Holland's educational system; his home became the first schoolhouse in the town. South Holland rapidly grew during the late 19th century as a result of its role as an important agricultural and industrial center for nearby Carbondale and Peoria counties. By 1900, South Holland had more than 1,000 residentsand boasted several thousand acres of farmland cultivated by its farmers and ranchers. Many prominent citizens of South Holland were involved in politics or business throughout their careers; some are still remembered today such as Judge James Kiely (1902-1983), Mayor Harry Crouch (1945-1978), or Drs.-Edwin Bosworth (1924-2002). One ofSouth Hollands most famous sons was Neil Armstrong who grew up here between 1951-1964 while he attended Carbondale North High School where he played football standout defenseman for Coach Don Nehlen’s varsity team his senior year... South Holland was first settled in 1810 by the Illinois Company of Illinois. The town was named for Captain John S. Holland, a United States Navy officer who helped lead American forces during the Mexican-American War. In 1834, South Holland became the capital of Cook County and remains its seat today.
