The town of Rome was founded by Peter Kapp and his wife Anna. The towns were united under the name of South Holland in 1836 because it was felt that the two names had different histories. The first settler in what is now South Holland was James Hays. He came to America in 1799 and died years later at the age of 72 on a farm he bought near Rome. His son John Hays settled there in 1824 and built a log cabin which still stands today. He became one of the most prominent citizens of the community and served as selectman, clerk, justice of peace, postmaster, bank president and trustee for many years. In addition to his accomplishments as an individual citizen, James Hays also helped to develop important aspects of South Holland's early history including its founding as a township, establishment of schools and churches, construction of roads and what is now its downtown district. The townspeople soon realized that they needed more than just a single store to support their growing community so they organized themselves into a society known as the "Manchester Association" which consisted of 14 members who pooled their resources to build a new store building on Main Street between Cook Avenue and State Street (now Washington Boulevard). This complex would serve as their central meeting place for all village activities until it burned down in 1868 when arsonists set fire to several buildings within reach of the Town Hall located on High Street beside Mercy Hospital). In order to replace this structure, residents voted unanimously to erect a large stone courthouse next door on State Street which would serve as their primary court house until it burned down again in 1903 (the building currently stands behind First National Bank Building). With this new courthouse available for use only during specific Village meetings held outsideofthe Village limits, business continued apace withinSouth Holland despite some challenges posed by neighboring villages such as Rome (which had already established itself as oneof Illinois' leading shopping centers)and Bloomington (which had emerged as an important manufacturing center thanks to its location along the Danforth River). Despite these challenges however, progress continued nonetheless with various initiatives such asModelTowns being started throughout Illinois with proceeds raised from each sale going towards helping local charities; school construction efforts continuing unabated; religious services being conducted both inside or outsideoftheChurch OF THE APOSTLES where popular services like weddings were also regularly performed;and even attempted farming ventures being undertaken suchas planting corn/beans onto lots adjacentto riverbanks where settlers could see crops gradually grow over time without any assistance from above!
