South Holland, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 10,656 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. South Holland is located on the eastern border of Cook County and is bordered by Streator to the south and Westchester to the east. According to the 2010 census, South Holland has a total area of 26 square miles (71 km2). The first permanent settler in what would become South Holland was John Prentice in 1837. A post office called Prenticeville was established in 1839, and remained in operation until 1912. The first church in South Holland was built in 1841 by Rev. Jno. Wigglesworth and dedicated on July 2nd. The present day Methodist Episcopal Church building was completed in 1886-87 after being built over an earlier chapel which had been destroyed by a tornado that year. In 1861 Abraham Lincoln visited South Holland while he was campaigning for election as president; however no trace remain of his visit other than some reconstructions from photos taken during that time line In 1865 Union general John McClernand set up headquarters here before moving his army northward into Illinois On April 4th 1865 Confederate General Robert Ewell arrived at this station with 875 men en route fromSpringfield to Cairo Missouri after their defeat at Wilson's Creek near Peoria That evening General McClernand ordered all forces out of town including those manning the post office buildings which were burned down within minutes afterwards

Over the years, South Holland has grown to be one of the most prosperous towns in northern Illinois, thanks in part to its location on the banks of the Fox River. In addition to its economic success, South Holland has been home to some of Illinois' most famous residents – such as Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant – and its citizens have helped make their city an integral part of northern Illinois culture and history.
The area now known as South Holland, Illinois was originally inhabited by the Pawnees. The first European to visit the area was Jean Charles de la Salle in 1679. He named the area after his home village of Hollande in Flanders, Belgium. The first permanent European settlement in what is now South Holland occurred in 1790 when French traders founded a trading post on a small branch of the Kankakee River. In 1812, the State of Illinois was created from parts of Indiana and Kentucky. South Holland became part of Illinois and remained so until 1818, when it was annexed by Michigan Territory.
