South Holland, Illinois is an unincorporated community in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. South Holland is located along the Mississippi River east of Chicago. The first Europeans to visit this area were French explorers in 1673–74 and Jesuit missionaries in 1702. French traders established a post at what is now North Branch on the south side of the river in 1753. A small settlement developed near present-day Harlem around 1800 under the name "Hudson". Warren County was organized from portions of Dearborn and DuPage counties on November 3, 1818. A school district was created in South Holland on February 15, 1915; it became part of the Chicago School District (now Chicago Public Schools) on April 1, 1999. On May 2, 1840, John Pritzker purchased about two acres (0.8 hectare) north of present-day West Side Highway and west of what is now Edison Road for $1 from Cornelius Vanderbilt I who also had bought land adjacent to what would become Portage Park from Potawatomi leader Weahegany c1768–71. He named his property "Vanderbilt Manor" after himself and donated it to St Clair Parish for use as a public school farmstead known as "Pritzker Prairie". In 1843 he sold another parcel totaling 0.6 acres (0.24 hectare) to James Crollo for $2 which became Cass Corridor Park today's Harrison Park neighborhood across Cicero Avenue from Northwestern High School). In 1865 Pritzker married Julia Foote Dodge; they raised six children there before moving back to New York City where she worked as a bookkeeper until her death in 1916 (). His widow later donated that portion of Vanderbilt Manor back to the parish for use as a high school campus called "Dodge College" which opened its doors September 9th 1948 athletic director Seymour Shriver attended one day classes during his summer vacation when Dr. Jesse Schnitzer met him outside gate; Shriver said that he wanted to buy land adjoining Vanderbilt Campus so he could build an airport there

In addition, South Holland has been home to several important political figures over the years: Mayor John Hynes (1948-1963) and Congressman Jerome Ryan (1983-1991). One of the most significant moments in township history occurred on November 5th, 1948 when Mayor John Hynes made his maiden address to township voters setting forth his vision for future growth within South Holland Township limits. This speech marked a turning point for Township residents who had grown weary of what they saw as dissatisfaction with City Hall leadership at that time; however since then township government has played an important role ineedsing Township growth while always working towards common goals through Committees/Councils/Supervisors/Directorships etc.).
South Holland was founded in 1812 by John Stephenson and his wife, Catharine. The town was named for the south side of the Illinois River. South Holland became a village in 1837 and an incorporated town in 1865. The population of South Holland was 14,000 in 1870 and 30,000 in 1910. In 1930, South Holland merged with Rockford to form the Union School District.
