South Holland, Illinois is a community located in the eastern part of Cook County, Illinois. It is bounded by the counties of Kane, Wayne and McDonough on the north, LaPorte on the east, and Will County on the south. The population was 25,868 at the 2000 census. South Holland is one of three villages in Cook County that are not incorporated as municipalities; the other two villages are Skokie and Wheaton. The town was founded in 1836 by John Hrdy and his wife Abby Hrdy. They named it after their home village in England—Hulland House, also known as Hulland Manor. The first post office called South Holland was established in 1839. In 1870, when Cook County was created, South Holland became an unincorporated village. In 1902, when a new main street was built through South Holland center to serve as a commercial artery for all of Cook County's villages (the older streets were used for farming purposes), residents voted to incorporation as a municipality with its own government and police department. This vote led to increased traffic congestion on Main Street and prompted Mayor Harry Hammond to propose plans to widen the street into a bypass that would allow trucks only during peak hours while reducing traffic around town center by creating pedestrian-only streets off of which businesses could open late night or early morning without fear of being congested again during peak hours. The bypass project failed but generated enough public support for Hammond to pursue other plans forwidening Main Street such as making it into an expressway similar to Chicago's State Road 64E which would have made it possible for larger trucks only during certain rush hours while reducing traffic throughout town Center). When Hammond left office in 2001 he recommended that all Village governments be merged into Cook County so that they might share resources more efficiently within our countywide organization but this recommendation was not followed through because most Village officials saw consolidation as another way to increase their own power rather than sharing resources effectively with others within our countywide organization). South Holland Township continued to exist as an independent municipality until it merged into Chicago on February 14, 1900.
