Just prior to its incorporation into Johnson County, what would become South Holland experienced one of the most desperate times in its history as an unincorporated community situated within a rapidly developing prairie county made up largely of virgin prairies with scant rainfall or irrigation facilities other than Friendship Creek which only worked sporadically due to sporadic floods caused by overflowing rivers. This situation led to rapid growth and development throughout much southern Johnson County resulting in increasingly less accessible resources such as water and transportation making self-reliance an important factor for many early settlers including those who began this process back home in south Holland. In 1847, following annexation by Chicago via a (failed) annexation referendum held at that time, much progress had already been made towards assimilation/migration here with families coming primarily from Indiana but also Minnesota and points north over subsequent years culminating with construction beginning on what would become Prairie View A&M University soon after – one among several major developments associated with post-war suburbanization across America facilitated through mass migration phenomena brought about not just by technological advances but also agricultural changes having far reaching impacts on rural economies overall leading eventually to increased poverty rates among certain social groups across different regions throughout North America while further expanding white flight from villages/towns throughout these areas; all contributing factors behind increasing suburbanization trends nationally during this period becoming more pronounced along racial lines as well continued Brazilian immigration fueling popular notions around race relations becoming increasingly segregated along socio-economic lines within American cities during this era creating unique challenges for communities like South Holland struggling against waves OF upscale/+ high end+ white flight alike while simultaneously trying unsuccessfully (for many)to create middle class enclaves amidst these rapidly gentrifying neighborhoods It should be noted however that despite some initial successes such as Prairie View A&M University), there have also been numerous setbacks frequently suffered herein such as continual declines in property values ensuing from lack thereof basic infrastructure; difficulty attracting & retaining quality jobs; accessibility issues stemming largely from limited public transportation options combined with ever dwindling tax bases resultingantly limiting redevelopment & revitalization opportunities; Highland Park being another notable exception within these same demographic boundaries - often Referred To As “The forgotten town” - highlighting how difficult it can be for struggling communities like South Holland striving against waves OF upscale/+ high end+ white flight alike while attempting unsuccessfully (for many)to create middle class enclaves amid these rapidly gentrifying neighborhoods
The first permanent settlers in South Holland, Illinois were the Wheeler family in 1810. The city of South Holland was founded on May 15, 1830, by James W. Wheeler and his wife Eliza Jane. The city was named for the town of Holland in England where James and Eliza had emigrated before coming to America.
