South Holland, Illinois is a small town in Cook County, Illinois. The population was 8,391 at the 2010 census. It is located on the north side of Chicago. The village of South Holland was established in 1847 by white settlers from Indiana and Ohio. The village was named for General Lucas Polk, a Ulysses S. Grant military officer who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as Mayor of Chicago. In 1872, the village merged with nearby Maywood to form the larger city of Chicago. The South Holland Commercial District is one of downtown's oldest commercial areas dating back to 1849 when Samuel Slater built his first store here. Slater became one of the leading merchants in Chicago and he also partnered with George Pullen to open First National Bank on State Street in 1865. The South Holland Trust Company Limited opened its doors here on Valentine's Day 1893 with Wm Hallett as President and Jno Baily as Vice President . Over time, many other businesses have been opened within or around South Holland including: Addis Ababa Pizza (now Papa John's Pizza), Sears Holdings Corporation, KFC World Headquarters (now Chick-fil-A), Ford Prefects Casino Resort & Spa and Crowne Plaza Hotel & Casino. Overall, since 2000 South Holland has seen an impressive increase in business activity - totaling more than 2 million jobs - thanks to its location within walking distance of most major retailers and attractions

South Holland first appeared on a map in 1836 when it was bounded by the towns of West Dundee and Crystal Lake on the south, Cook County to the east and Rock Island to the north. In 1851, South Holland was reincorporated as a village. On December 12, 1916, South Holland became an unincorporated community governed by its own board of trustees. The community lost its autonomy in 1978 and merged with nearby Arlington Heights into Arlington Heights-South Holland Township.
