In 1911, another gunsmith named John Browning created what is commonly referred to as the world’s first rifle designed for long-range shooting called the “Browning Automatic Rifle”. This rifle remains popular today and is used by outdoor enthusiasts around the world. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and is located on the south side of Chicago. The first people to live here were the Potawatomi who called it "Wojakowoc". South Holland was founded in 1836 by Capt. Nathan Myrick as a post office with the name "Holland." In 1847, it became a county seat. The first school in South Holland was built in 1859 by Rev. John Jett with donations from local farmers and mechanics. In 1865, Mayor George Hennepin recommended that South Holland be annexed into Chicago because its land value exceeded that of any other towns in Cook County. On July 15, 1870, South Holland became one of thirty-eight towns in Cook County when it was merged with Park Ridge to form the city of Chicago. South Holland's economy has always been based on agriculture and manufacturing since its founding; today many of its industries include: baking powder (from cornstarch), cheese (from milk), plastics (including polycarbonate materials), printing ink (from coal tar), and car parts (such as Engineered Glasses). It also has a large agricultural sector which currently employs over 200 people including about 60% full-time farmworkers who do not have benefits or protections under U.S labor law like prevailing wages or overtime pay!

South Holland is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The community was named for John H. Southwell, an early settler and the founder of Aurora Township (now North Aurora Township). The new village of South Holland was organized on December 12, 1836 from parts of Aurora Township and Addison Township. In 1838, local farmers formed a school board to manage their own schools; this idea became popular throughout DuPage County and helped establish a sense of community among its settlers. The first schoolhouse was built in what is now the business district of South Holland. In 1840, two more schools were erected; one on the north side of town and one on the south side near where present-day Irving Park Road meets State Street. One reason why South Holland grew quickly after it was platted was because it had no natural enemies: no other towns were founded until later inDuPage County when land grants began flowing into that area from Springfield Village and Chicago Heights Neighborhoods
The area now known as South Holland was first settled by Native Americans in the late 18th century. In 1847, the United States acquired what is now Illinois from Mexico, and in 1848, the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad was completed through the area. The railroad helped to spur development in South Holland, and by 1860, it had become a small town with a population of about 100 people. In 1865, South Holland became part of the newly formed state of Illinois. Over the next few years, however, much growth took place in South Holland as businesses and residents shifted from agriculture to industry. By 1907, South Holland had amassed a population of over 1,000 people and was becoming an important center for trade and commerce in eastern Illinois. During World War II,South Holland played an important role in the war effort as its residents donated goods and services to various organizations such as the military and agricultural programs. After the war ended, many businesses closed down or were sold off throughout South Holland but some continue to operate today including KFC (Korea Food Corporation) which began operations here in 1955
