South Holland, Illinois is a town located in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 12,651 at the 2010 census. It was named for John Hancock of Boston who donated land to the town in 1836. South Holland is one of the original towns in McLean County and it has been part of the Springfield metropolitan area since its incorporation as a city in 1951. The first settlers to southern Illinois were those from New England who came down the Ohio River in 1800. They were joined by other English immigrants including Robert Treat Pynchon and his family who arrived around 1815. These pioneers erected log cabins on large tracts of land which they reserved for themselves and their families until after they had satisfied their own needs and had built up some capital within themselves. After many years of growth, there were only ten residents living permanently in South Holland when it was organized as a village on March 10, 1836 under the leadership of James Hickey with Samuel Sloan as its first mayor. With this new community established, various school board meetings were held to decide what type or format schools would be designed - an agricultural school (not open to public), a moral education school (now known as Villa Park High School), or a high school for boys only (now known as Cook County HS). A hospital also became necessary so that soldiers coming through town could be treated without having to leave their homes; ground was purchased near present day Harrisonburg Road and improvements began immediately with construction lasting six months with three men working daily during that time It wasn’t until 1840 when brick buildings became available which brought about much needed revenue for village coffers while providing social services such as fire insurance and streetlights After several more years of growth, by 1850 there were over 140 people living permanently in South Holland Village . In 1861-1862 another increase took place when property adjoining present day South Holland Village was annexed making it into what is now called Harrisonburg Township . On December 1st 1870 , then Mayor James Fenton dedicated South Holland Cemetery after long negotiations between himself, Trustee Jacob Slatkin & Drinnon Bendixen
