South Holland was first settled by Europeans in 1795 as a small hamlet on the east side of the Sangamon River. The community name derived from Huron term "Holland", meaning "border" or "prompting." By 1837 South Holland had become an incorporated village with a population of 1,500. In 1847 South Holland became one of twelve townships in Cook County and was named for General James K. Polk who had served as Ulysses S. Grant's Secretary of State during the Mexican-American War and as Mayor of Springfield, Illinois. In 1901 South Holland merged with other villages to form what is now known as Midway Village (later Midway Township). The merger represented the culmination of efforts by local officials to improve transportation connections between their communities and create an interconnected regional economy that would support industrial growth in southern Cook County during the early 20th century. The post office at Midway Township opened on September 11, 1881 and remained open until it moved to Oak Park in 1961; its last mail delivery took place on October 25, 1966.
