South Holland, Illinois is a small town in the northwest corner of Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and is one of the most ethnically diverse towns in Illinois. South Holland is home to many Polish-American families as well as African American and Latino families. The town was founded by German immigrants in 1848. After years of development by Germans and Poles, it became an all-white community when white residents moved out in the early 1960s to make way for black citizens who had been brought over as slaves. The town's name comes from Henry Holland, an apostle of Methodism who lived nearby and helped found South Holland Methodist Church in 1847. In recent years, however, South Holland has seen a growing number of people from other backgrounds coming to live there: Latinos now make up about 25 percent of the population while African Americans account for about 15 percent; Polish Americans make up about 10 percent of the total population but are responsible for most economicactivity within town; and Irish Catholics account for around 5 percent of the total population but also play a significant role in social life and politics within town. Today's south side suburbia began slowly developing during Reconstruction following America's Civil War when many white southern farmers decided not to move back into areas that had been won by their former Confederates on behalf of Union forces over those led by General Ulysses S. Grant (the "Unconditional Surrender"). This decision set off a process known as "white flight" which saw blacks moving away from Arkansas Valley westward into more racially integrated regions including north suburban Cook County such as Downers Grove (now Elmhurst) and Northbrook (now Westchester). By 1870 whites made up only 60 percent of South Holland's population while Blacks constituted almost all its remaining residents (about 90%). In 1900 Whites numbered just under 100 while Black residents made up almost all occupantsstill making it one of largest black concentrations anywhere in America outside Baltimore or New York City
