South Holland is located on the south side of Chicago and is bordered by Beech Park to the north, North Side to the east and west, and Maywood to the south. The village of South Holland has a ZIP code of 60460. The Village of South Holland was organized in 1871 when nine farmers from nearby Maywood pooled their money to purchase land from Jesse Hoadley for $1 an acre ( ). In 1892, settlers from other parts of Cook County founded two other villages in what were then rural areas: Arlington Heights to the southeast and Westchesterville to the northwest. South Holland's first post office opened in 1899. On July 15, 1907–the date that South Holland celebrate its centennial–the first gasoline powered locomotive pulled into town on local trackage. That year also saw America enter World War I with America entering as a belligerent nation; this event helped lay groundwork for later businesses such as American Crystal Glass Company which operated out of town until 1978 and American Petroleum Refining Company which operates today out of facilities just west of town near State Fairgrounds ( now called McCormick Place). The village's first school was built in 1901 and served grades one through twelve; it closed in 1963 due to lack of students but reopened as First Creek Community School District #2A in 1985 after being transferred from neighboring Arlington Heights In 2006-2007 realignment within Cook County led to annexation by Cicero Township which placed South Holland within Cicero School District #8A . In 2017-2018 another realignment led to annexation by Thornton Township which placed South Holland within Cicero School District #4A . On March 14th 2018 it was announced that all 3 school districts will be merged into one new district known as “Northlake” effective September 1st 2018
