South Elgin, Illinois is a small town in DuPage County, Illinois. It is the smallest of the five towns in DuPage County and has a population of just over 9,000 residents. South Elgin was founded in 1836 as a log cabin community on the eastern edge of what is now Elmhurst Township. The town developed into a small farming community with lumber and machine shops being its main businesses during the early part of the 20th century. In recent years, however, South Elgin has become an important node in The Chicago–Milwaukee–St. Paul metropolitan area because of its location along I-90 and its close proximity to downtown Chicago. The history of South Elgin began with log cabins that were built on the east edge of what is today Elmhurst Township. The first post office was established in 1836, and by 1840, there were also two churches in town – one Presbyterian and one Baptist. By 1865, there were also four schools: one school for boys (established 1837), one school for girls (1847), a grocery store (established 1871), and a blacksmith shop (established 1888). During the late 19th century, Although South Elgin did not develop into an agricultural center as much as some other nearby towns such as Wheaton or Round Lake Park due to lack of access to natural resources or interest by farmers, it became an important node within The Chicago–Milwaukee–St Paul metropolitan area because it was located very close to downtown Chicago and had many industrial plants that employed many people from south central Illinois. During this time period too there were several major events that took place in town including the birth of President Harry S Truman on April 12th 1945 at McCormick Place; when Armour Manufacturing Company merged with American Tobacco Company; when Ford Motor Company moved its operations from Gary Indiana to Dearborn Michigan; when Sears Roebuck & Co., Inc., bought out JH Weismann’s department store chain which opened up more than 1 million square feet at three locations across Chicagoland before going bankrupt; when Robert Hutton founded Hutton Paper Products company which manufactured paper products such as toilet paper and envelopes outfitting stores throughout northern Indiana before selling them off to Proctor And Gamble who continued production until 1984; when John Dvorak played his first concert at Masonic Temple Theatre preceded by six weeks performance at Park West Theater under special circumstances including no curtain raiser since only 500 tickets available After playing three concerts consecutively including two nights inside Masonic Temple Theatre without any breaks between shows he announced his retirement from touring after only 10 months while continuing work outside Mason Temple Theatre becoming known as "the last great American original" following performances at Northwestern University's Urbana-Champaign campus where he received an honorary doctorate degree In 1951 followed by engagements at Drake University's Lamont School Of Music where he taught voice until his death on May 8th 1978 having performed over 2500 times since making his debut appearance at age 17 years old At 78 years old he still holds the record for most appearances ever given outdoors A few things Hurricane Floyd brought about changes within music industry which include Neil Young moving from Cedar Rapids Iowa to Nashville Tennessee after previously working for Reprise Records where he recorded dozens of albums before leaving after 13 seasons while Katrina destroyed New Orleans infamous nightclub called Birdie's musical legacy continues with Fenton native Kip Moore interviewed for new Netflix show "Chef'n'Fury" premiering August 25th 2016

The town was named for Captain Elijah South Elgin and his family who settled there in 1836. The first post office was established in 1837 and the first store was built on Main Street in 1850. In 1860, the name of the town changed to South Elgin after General John Pemberton's headquarters were moved from Vandalia to this community. The town has grown rapidly over the years with annexations from other municipalities including Carbondale and Addisonport. South Elgin is located at (41.311801, -88.858859). According to the 2010 US Census estimates, it had a population of 9,577 people living in 3,569 households out of which 36% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61% were married couples lived together, 10% had a female householder with no husband present, and 16% were non-families. In terms of ethnicity however only 15% Caucasian residents while 85% are IL native born residents
