South Elgin is a small town in Sangamon County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,572 at the 2010 census. The village of South Elgin is located within the town limits of South Elgin. The south side of the village is largely agricultural with a few light industry buildings scattered throughout. The Village of South Elgin was organized on February 14, 1871 from part of the Town of North Elgin and from parts of the townships of Addison and Knox. On October 1, 1896, South Elgin became an incorporated community when it passed a charter amendment by an overwhelming vote. In 1898, part of the village was annexed to the larger town of NorthElgin through annexation proceedings following a legal battle over land titles between the two villages. On November 3, 2003 via referendum ballot measure (No. 2), SouthElgonians approved annexing portions of East Carroll Township to their community as well; this action created what is now known as "East Carroll Township". Prior to this annexation all lands west and northwest Of Elm Street were included in NorthElgon which would later become Main Street/Uptown Park District #2-3 while east and southeast Of Elm Street were annexed into SouthElgon which would eventually become Elmhurst Avenue/PARK DISTRICT 4-5

South Elgin, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 52,569 at the 2010 census. It is the sixth-largest city in Chicago by population. South Elgin began as part of the first organized settlement along the Fox River in what is now Kendall County in 1824. In 1827, it became a town and was incorporated as South Elgin on February 24,1828. On May 3, 1865, during the American Civil War., Confederate General Robert Ewell's army raided into South Elgin and burned most of the town before withdrawing without taking any prisoners or loot. The burning has been officially cited as one of the worst acts of war against civilians in America.
In 1814, the first of two settlements in what is now South Elgin was founded. The town was named for Elijah Wood (1784-1846), a Revolutionary War veteran and member of the Illinois State House of Representatives from 1795 to 1800. In 1829, an act by the General Assembly authorized the erection of a school in South Elgin. The first school building was erected on Main Street in 1830. A second school building was built on Technology Lane in 1840. The town's population increased rapidly during the mid-19th century, due to its location at a crossroads and its trade connections with nearby towns and villages. By 1860, South Elgin had a population of over 1,000 residents. During World War I, South Elgin served as headquarters for forces operating in Europe. In 1922, South Elgin became one of five cities merged into the city of Chicago; it remains an incorporated municipality today. The current incarnation of South Elgin began as a small farming community located along the Carbondale River near present day Carbondale (then called Carbon County) and Black Hawk Lake. During prohibition times, many people living around Carbondale worked in Danville or Prairie du Chien because those communities had no prohibition laws themselves; however, when Prohibition ended in 1933, most people turned their attention to farming again and did not return to alcohol production until after World War II when things changed again due to Velcro
