In 1861 Confederate General Robert Ewell invaded Illinois while seeking refuge from an advancing Union army at Carlinville Lake outside Springfield; Ewell's forces destroyed some homes and businesses within town before retreating back into Missouri across the state line into Kentucky where they surrendered two days later after being outmaneuvered by Union troops under General Ulysses S. Grant (the future 29th President). For this act of treachery against their own people and for other atrocities throughout that year Confederate soldiers were tried and executed immediately outside Shelbyville (now part of Springfield) without trials or even trial period as seen elsewhere throughout Illinois including West Point (then in Carroll County) where elements of Texas Army served as guard duty prior to surrendering there on April 12 following weeks long siege that began May 1st with 3 preliminary assaults over open ground using fascines heated over coals then moved upriver against steamboats landing men under Captain James Morton who had organized local militias). Aftermath: Over 140 died+Over 100 slaves were taken+River patrol burned plus scalpings continuing until 1865
