The township was named after Captain Houghton's grandfather, who settled in what is now South Elgin on a farm that he purchased from the priest at St. Patrick's Church. During the American Civil War, General George Armstrong Custer passed through South Elgin on his way to battle against General Ulysses S. Grant at Lawrence Junction near Chicago in October 1862. Custer's cavalry unit stopped for dinner at the Houghtons' house before continuing their journey eastward. In 1879, prominent physician Drury Ladd sold land adjacent to his home in South Elgin Township to organized farming community of Spring Grove Prairie which became known as "The Gilded Age" due to its high-end homes and businesses built during this time period by wealthy investors including Cornelius Vanderbilt Vanderlip (founder of Commodore Oil Company) and Jno.[3] In 1907–08, a group of men led by local banker Alfred Pritzker converted an old gristmill into one of America’s first air-conditioned hotels called The Park Hotel (now part of Hyatt Regency). Mrtk[4] also built much of today's downtown with some assistance from Canadian businessman Samuel Insull (the founder of Ford Motor Company). However much progress had been made since those early days when Captains John Houghton and Alfred Pritzker set out to build what would become South Elgin into a thriving community; however,-racism still played an important role throughout most aspects of life here until well into the 21st century when attitudes began slowly changing as more recent arrivals started coming through - bringing with them values such as diversity and inclusion which helped make this area one that welcomed all regardless social backgrounds or economic means while also preserving its historical fabric; even going so far as having one street renamed after another African American leader or educator who helped contribute materially or socially theretofore unheard-of amounts towards building south elgintown into where it stands today: Harriet Tubman Elementary School/Middle School & Beyond being just two examples among many Dozens throughout this vibrant place!

They originally intended to establish a fur-trading post but soon realized that they could not compete with the Potawatomi on these shores. Therefore, they decided to move inland and start anew. In 1816, they founded the town of North Elgin on land that once belonged to the Potawatomi tribe. Over time, more English settlers moved into South Elgin from England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Denmark and other parts of Europe. Some also settled down along the riverbanks where fishing became an important source of income for many families. By 1830, there were over 500 people living in South Elgin alone!
