Unfortunately, this period of growth also spelled disaster for the community: housing prices plummeted after the war ended; jobs dried up; and crime rates soared as affluent newcomers relocated into areas like Cicero or Northbrook instead of staying put and keeping their neighborhoods watchable (this trend continued through the 1970s until suburbanization began reversing itself).
