South Elgin, Illinois is a small town in Cook County, Illinois. The population was 8,883 at the 2000 census and 9,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The village of South Elgin was first settled in 1831 by men from Kentucky and Indiana. The original home of the village's founder, Elijah Howe, still stands today on a parcel of land that forms its core. South Elgin's growth began during the 1830s when farmers started to settle in the area around what is now Elmhurst Avenue and Cicero Road. By 1840, there were more than 100 families living in South Elgin. In 1851, James Blythe purchased 2 acres (1 ha) near present-day Elmhurst Avenue for $60. He built a log cabin called "Blythe's Cabin" which he used as his farmstead until his death in 1865. During this time period two other settlers named John Fenton and David Dixon also founded homes in South Elgin - both within 10 years of Blythe's purchase. In 1871, Willis Harnett established a mill on the north side of Cicero Road just west of present-day Elmhurst Avenue; Harnett became one of southElgin’s earliest residents and worked at his mill until it closed in 1916. In 1875 Gausman & Son opened a flourmill on Elmhurst Avenue east of Cicero Road; this mill continued operating until 1935 when it was replaced by an electric plant that operated for many years). A post office was established at South Elgin on September 21, 1830, under name "Elmhurst". On February 1st 1870 another post office called "Cicero" was established with same Name but changed to "South Elgintown" after postmaster Daniel Boyd moved from Cicero to serve here as well as being predecessor to current Postmaster Gary Smith who has been serving since December 1st 2009! On November 3rd 1886 General Electric Company erected their first wind turbine blade factory which located just northwest corner lot # 15/16 block EAST OF SELINBURG AVE @ CICERO ROAD! This Factory manufactured blades for GE Aviation company planes starting up World War II! It still operate today powering our Village hall energy bill!

South Elgin, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 51,521 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Cook County after Chicago. The city was founded in 1853 by George Stephenson as "Elgin", on land given to him by his father. The name was changed to South Elgin in 1881 when it became a part of the new state of Illinois. In 1923, the City of South Elgin merged with neighboring Coldwater and East Aurora municipalities to form one larger municipality called "Cook County". The merger created more jobs for locals than it did for commuters from other parts of Cook County. Today, South Elgin remains a diverse and vibrant community that celebrates its culture and history while enjoying its wonderful surroundings. The community has several attractions including two museums - the Museum of Science and Industry and the Cultural Heritage Center - as well as restaurants, theaters, shopping malls and more.
In 1809, the village of South Elgin was organized. It was located on the south side of the river near present day Carbondale. The first settler in South Elgin was Capt. Samuel French. The town erected a meetinghouse and built a road to connect it with Carbondale. In 1834, the town petitioned for annexation by Carbondale and received approval. In 1835, South Elgin became a city and had its own government.
