South Elgin, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 109,468 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Cook County after Chicago. As of the 2010 census, South Elgin had a racial diversity that included more than fifty percent African American and more than seventy percent Hispanic. The city's nickname is "The melting pot" because it has been home to many people from all over the world who have mixed with local Americans. The first Europeans to visit what is now South Elgin were French explorers in 1679 and 1680. They named it La Salle Island after Jean-Baptiste La Salle, an explorer who had traveled through Canada and explored the Lakes of America. In 1765, Englishman James Kieft purchased land east of present-day South Elgin for £100 (the equivalent of $2 million today). Kieft named his new village after himself—Kelvin—in recognition of his contributions to early settler life in this area. In 1814, Congress passed an act authorizing Illinois Governor Edward Molineux to recognize claims by white males within five miles of any Indian reservation or post office west of Sangamon River as part of the Louisiana Purchase. This Act also authorized Molineux to establish townships within these boundaries and give them legal status similar to those enjoyed by villages located on reservations across the Mississippi River basin southward into Kentucky and Tennessee. On November 2, 1814–four days after President James Kieft's map showing Illinois extending eastward from Lake Michigan was published in newspapers throughout Great Britain–a large group of white men led by John Paulding reached Kelvin from Sangamon River near Fort Wayne on horseback where they built a cabin and began farming operations which would become known as “Paulding” Township (later renamed “South Elgin” Township). On December 12th following celebrations held at Paulding's cabin including dances with music provided by two Native American women singers/composers called Nellie Shorenstein and Sarah Winnemucca—an act that helped promote settlement among European Americans in this region—another group under Captain Nicholas Robinson located just north-west (now northwest) of present day SouthElgin along present day White Road founded their own town called “Streator” on December 20th 1814 about four miles northeast from Paulding's original town site; Robinson Town later became known as Aurora when nearby Aurora City was chartered on May 3rd 1840 according to US Laws at that time! These pioneers established what would become known as "Chicago"township! Many others followed suit over ensuing years until eventually all but one township establishment had occurred within five miles either side or adjacent to any IndianReservation or post office west of Sangamon River during late 1800s & early 1900s!"
