South Elgin, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 24,715 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settlement in what is now South Elgin was made by Nicholas Haven and his family on the banks of the Sangamon River in 1786. The Havens were granted 640 acres (243 hectares) of land by the British government in 1793 as part of a grant to help bolster American defenses during the Quaker Revolution. In 1814, John Holbrook built a sawmill on what are now Main Street and Washington Avenue in South Elgin. The first post office was established in South Elgin on January 12, 1827. The town became an incorporated village on February 14, 1846. It was named for General James Kieft who had served as commander of Ulysses S. Grant's army during the Mexican–American War and later became mayor of Chicago after winning election in 1851. In 1912, Samuel Morse donated land near North Michigan Drive to establish a school district which would become known as Morse Township School District No. 2 (now called Elmhurst Township). This school district served rural areas east and west of downtown Chicago until it merged with Arlington Heights School District on March 1, 1984 to form one large school district that encompasses all suburban neighborhoods within Cook County northwest of Downtown Chicago including parts of Alden Park, Cicero-Northwest Side, Forest Hills-Highland Park and other nearby villages or townships such as Streamwood-Grayslake Township which also came under Arlington Heights control at that time There have been several moves over time towards secession from this larger school district but so far there has been no formal announcement or push back from either party about any potential changes coming our way

South Elgin is located in the eastern part of Cook County and it is bordered to the north by Aurora Township and to the east by Carbondale Township. To the south and west are small townships called Holyoke, Algonquin, and Romeoville. The first European settlers in what is now South Elgin were Native Americans who came from present-day Wisconsin in search of land to settle. They built their homes on long prairies that stretched from near La Salle Avenue eastward to Carbondale Boulevard. In 1837, after years of effort by Mayor John Prentice and other leaders of Aurora Township (northwest of South Elgin), Chicago gave Aurora Township to South Elgin for $1,000 cash. The new township included all or most of what are now North Aurora Township, Carbondale Township (east of South Elgin), Holyoke Township (southwest of SouthElagin), Algonquin Township (northwest of NorthElagin), and Romeoville Townships (southwest of NorthElagin). At first there were only 25 residents in SouthEligon; however, over time more people moved into the area because it became a stop on stagecoaches running between Chiapas City andChicago. By 1840 there were 400 residents living in part or all of what became SouthEligon. The original courthouse was built on State Street just east of Elmira Road northwestof where it crosses Route 9 today; it burned down in 1884 but was rebuilt with ivy around its gabled roofing replaced with corrugated iron sheets metal mesh solarium windows completed 1909–10 under direction from then-Mayor George Daley using funds provided by millionaire real estate developer Lewis Rooker Sr..
