One of these businesses was The Gunsmith Shop, which operated from 1887-1967. In those years, The Gunsmith Shop Manufactured andsold pistols, revolvers, shotguns, and rifles. One of the most famous customers at The Gunsmith Shop was Abraham Lincoln. When he first came to South Elgin in 1837, he stopped at The Gunsmith Shop on his way to buy a rifle. President Abraham Lincoln also met with several other customers at TheGunsmithShop during this time. In 1967, The Gunsmith Shop closed its doors for good after many years of operation. However, its legacy is still felt today in South Elgin thanks to its numerous customers who continue to visit the business today.

South Elgin, Illinois is a city in the U.S. state of Illinois and the county seat of Cook County. The population was 115,822 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. South Elgin was founded as a village in 1847 by Captain John Prentice and his family, who named it after their estate in Scotland. The village grew slowly until 1872 when construction began on a rail line between Chicago and Quincy, Massachusetts. After only two years, the railroad collapsed due to lack of funding and South Elgin lost its status as an important town. However, it regained some prominence during World War II as a manufacturing center for aircraft parts and munitions production. During the 1960s and 1970s, South Elgin experienced rapid growth as businesses moved into new buildings along Elm Street including IBM’s North Building (now known as Weil Hall), Sears Tower (now known as Kress), American Broadcasting Company’s Midway Building (now known as Media Temple), Wrigley Field (now known as United Center) and various other high-rise buildings such as FirstNational Bank Tower (later renamed MCI/CNN Center). In recent decades, however, South Elgin has become more vibrant with a focus on community services such as arts programming, public health initiatives and support for local businesses. In addition to its downtown district which remains home to many large businesses and cultural amenities such as the Community Arts Institute,[1] South Elgin also has several smaller districts that are rich in history or flavor: The Randolph District contains one of America's first planned communities;[2] The Hyde Park District features Victorian homes dating back to 1871;[3] The Bloomingdale District includes fashionable stores from the turn-of-the-century;[4] And lastly, there is the Olde Towne district which containshistoric homes dating back to 1800s

South Elgin, Illinois was founded in 1847 by John Wesley sawmill owner Isaac P. Wright. The town was named after the small stream that ran through it. It grew rapidly during the 1850s and 1860s due to its location on the southern edge of a new rail line, which made it an important trade center. In 1872, South Elgin became one of thirteen towns in Cook County and was incorporated as a village. The town's population reached 1,500 by 1900 but declined to just over 700 by 1910. However, South Elgin experienced significant growth during World War II as the war led to increased production at Wright sawmills and other local businesses. After the war, the economy stabilized and some residents returned to their homes; however, many others continued living in South Elgin until its closure in 1984. Today, much of South Elgin remains unincorporated but is designated as part of the village of South Elgin proper.
On November 3, 1832, the first settler in what is now South Elgin Township, Illinois was John Armstrong. He and his family arrived on a small boat from the port of New Orleans. Armstrong had been a carpenter before coming to America and he started a small shop in town. By 1850,Armstrong had three children and he started another business doing freight work for farmers around the area. In 1856,Armstrong married Sarah Aiken and they moved to their present home on North Elgin Street. They were the first families to live in that area. In 1881,South Elgin Township was organized into four wards: North Ward (later Cook County), East Ward (later Kane County), South Ward (later McHenry County) and West Ward (later Will COUNTY). The first post office was established in South Elgin on January 1, 1882. As township grew it decided to build its own school system which became known as "The South Side School District." It also decided to build its first courthouse which was completed in 1893. In 1907-08,the township built a new garage/town hall which still stands today on Elm Street near its original location. The building is primarily used for community events such as concerts and dances but has also been used as an administrative center by the township for many years including being home to the township clerk's office since 1908 until 1995 when it was moved to its current location at 501 N Chicago Ave., just north of downtown Chicago
