South Elgin is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The Village of South Elgin was organized on November 3, 1871 from portions of the Town of Rockford and the Township of La Salle. The first settler in what is now South Elgin was John Waddell who arrived in 1825 from England. He built his first home on a farm he purchased just east of present day Route 66. In 1875, Waddell's son-in-law James Joicey bought land southwest of present day Route 66 and laid out a town called Westville which became South Elgin after being incorporated on February 14th, 1876 by vote of its citizens. In 1901, when South Elgin annexed parts of Hanover Park (the former village) it became one municipality with a population over 10,000 people In 1907 they annexed most of Glencoe (the former township), giving their total municipal population to 15,362 as opposed to 11,814 then On July 1st 1912 they merged with neighboring townships La Salle and Rockford to form the city of Chicago
