South Elgin, Illinois is a village in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,872 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. South Elgin is located on the southern shore of Lake Michigan and borders Northwestern Illinois to the north and east; Westchester County, New York to the south; and Kane County to the west. The village was founded in 1881 by Dutch immigrants as a small town on land that had been donated by John D. Rockefeller Sr. The name "South Elgin" was chosen because it suited both its location on the southern shore of Lake Michigan and its history as an agricultural center with many plantations dating back to before America's arrival in this continent. The first post office was opened in 1882. As South Elgin grew, it became known for its fine carriages made from corn-based leather and whalebone mesh instead ofwenches or other traditional saddles then available at that time. In 1903, South Elgin became one of only a few American villages to be granted directly municipal status by the state of Illinois—a distinction it retains today even though most village residents still live within their individual township or hamlet boundaries

At its peak in the 1920s and 1930s, South Elgin had a population of about 2,000 people and was one of Cubs' home towns. The town's Main Street is still lined with historical homes dating back to the 1800s. The history of South Elgin is intertwined with that of its two sister towns—Elgin and Aurora—and their surrounding communities such as Romeoville and Burr Ridge. Aurora became part of Chicago when it was annexed into the city in 1904; Elgin followed suit in 1907. In 1927, both Towns merged to form one entity under the name "South Elgin". Although now an unincorporated community within Kane County, South Elgin retains some vestiges of its Greek American past: many residents are descendants of those who arrived here duringthe early years of settlement. And while today's economy largely revolves around agriculture (a mainstay since before railroads), much older businesses still operate in South Elgon—ranging from general stores to caterers and hair stylists.
In 1837, a group of farmers led by John Brown established the village of South Elgin on the west side of the Illinois River. The original town was located near where present-day Carbondale is today. In 1839, South Elgin became one of the first towns in Sangamon County when it was organized from parts of Calhoun and La Salle counties. The community thrived until the early 1850s, when farmsteads were replaced by cotton plantations in central Illinois. By 1870, South Elgin had shrunk to a few scattered buildings and Farms around Indianola Creek. It disappeared completely from history after that date.
