South Elgin, Illinois was once a part of the United States of America. The community was founded in 1821 by John C. Calhoun as a small farming village on the banks of the Sangamon River. Today, South Elgin is a thriving city with a history that spans over 175 years. The city’s rich history can be traced back to its founding day when John C. Calhoun decided to make his home here after moving from Georgia. The original settlers were farmers who grew corn, beans, and other vegetables on their farmsteads near present-day downtown South Elgin. By 1830, however, the town had grown so large that it needed its own courthouse and school district. In 1834, South Elgin became an incorporated municipality with a population of just over 100 residents. Over time, South Elgin has undergone several changes both good and bad. during the 1850s the town experienced an influx of new immigrants from Ireland and Italy; these newcomers helped to create what is now known as “the Italian Village” along Elm Street at the heart of town. At one point in time, South Elgin boasted more than 1,000 businesses! also during this time period local physician Drury published his medical journal called The Lancet in which he shared scientific findings with patients living in nearby cities such as Chicago and Springfield (now Peoria). Unfortunately for Drury and his Published Journal during this period there was little competition among physicians for patients’ attention due to lack of technology at the time! In 1862 when Lincoln was elected President and began waging war against Confederate forces in Missouri City (now St Louis), many citizens in South Elgin chose not to support him politically or financially because they felt he would do nothing for their community other than send more soldiers into battle without providing any resources or assistance whatsoever! This decision cost many people their homes and livelihoods within our city limits – something that still affects current day residents today! However despite all these challenges faced by our community throughout its long history – through good times AND bad –SouthElgonians have always been resilient! Through hard work, determined attitudes towards change & determination towards anything possible we have managed to remain strong even under some tough circumstances- something that continuesto set us apart from others throughout our country & world!!!
The town of South Elgin, Illinois was founded in 1834 by Captain George Stephenson. The town was named after the south fork of the La Salle River. The first settlers in South Elgin were farmers who had come from Indiana and Illinois. In 1836, the town had a population of just twelve people. By 1840, the town had grown to thirty-six people. In 1846, the town passed an ordinance that prohibited slavery within its borders. After two years of debating, the Town Council voted to pass this ordinance. The ordinance became effective on November 1, 1846.
