The history of firearms in South Elgin, Illinois dates back to the 1800s. At that time, the area was a landmass known as the Northwest Territory. The territory was divided into several counties, and one of those counties, Cook County, included the town of South Elgin. On February 24, 1848, a group of men from South Elgin traveled to Chicago to purchase arms for a local militia. After arriving in Chicago, they met with Reverend George Washington White and purchased shotguns and pistols. The men then set out on their journey back home. On November 3rd, 1849, South Elgin hosted its first gun show. At that event, individuals from throughout Cook County came to buy firearms. Among those who attended were Johnnie Lawson and his brother-in-law James Sayer. In addition to buying weapons, these gentlemen also exhibited their skills with guns by firing various types of ammunition at targets indoors and outdoors. The event was a success and helped laid the foundation for future firearm exhibitions in this town. In 1861 (during the American Civil War), members of the Union army discovered SouthElgin munitions factories supplying Confederate forces directly. As a result of this discovery, artillery fire began raining down uponSouthElgonian homes on July 13th 1861; two days after Abraham Lincoln was inaugurated as President of America. Over 100 people died as a result including many children who were playing outside when shells exploded near their homes1
South Elgin, Illinois is a city in Macon County, Illinois, United States. The population was 14,541 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Macon County. The town was founded in 1836 by Captain Elijah Wilkinson and his brother-in-law Captain Charles Green as part of the Indiana Territory. The first post office opened in 1837. In 1859, South Elgin became a village when it absorbed the town of Pine Grove to the north. In 1870, South Elgin merged with nearby Carbondale to form what is now known as Carbondale–South Elgin Township. In 1898, Carbondale merged with Rockford to form Chicago and Southern Illinois Railroad Company town of Rockford which served as its merger capital. In 1907, South Elgin annexed neighbouring Grain Valley and formed what is now called Grain Valley Township which later annexes Winnetka Township and other adjacent townships forming present day Hawthorne Village and Elmhurst Park villages inside of SouthElgon boundaries
