South Elgin, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 31,593 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest municipality in Cook County and one of its most populous communities. South Elgin is located on the eastern border of Chicago and has a population density of only 2,500 people per square mile (1,000/km²). The town was organized in 1837 as a small cluster of log cabins near what is now Justusville. The first settlers were John and Mary Nichols who came from Connecticut in 1836. On May 8, 1838, they married Anna Kappecker and named their new settlement South Elgin after Anna’s father-in-law – Samuel English – who had founded Edwardsville in 1795. During the American Civil War 1861-1865, General Ulysses S. Grant encampments camped nearby on July 10–12 1863 while he led his army through central Illinois against Confederate General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia; south ELGIN was within Union lines during this time period! Many residents emigrated to northern Wisconsin during this time due to poor conditions or poverty following the Panic of 1893 which ruined much farmland throughout southern Illinois including South Elgin where prices for crops had plummeted by 50%. Most farmers abandoned their properties as prices for land dried up and labor became scarce following war-time shortages caused by restrictions placed on exports brought about by blockadeism that began with President James Buchanan's administration in 1858. North Dakota oil interests leased equipment necessary to produce corn oil needed for munitions production from early 1862 until 1865 but production ceased when transportation difficulties made it difficult to get goods into marketable condition without large amounts of federal subsidies which drained resources away from other sectors such as education & industry creating an ever widening economic disparity between rich & poor across America;southElgin experienced rapid growth rates during this time despite these limitations & today boasts some impressive architecture feats such as Pritzker Pavilion (built 1936), Willis Tower (1947), Sears Tower (1970) & Trump Tower (1987) all built during or shortly after post WW II boom years!
The town of South Elgin was founded in 1837 by Andrew Duncan. The town was named after General David Dixon, who fought in the Mexican-American War and was awarded the Medal of Honor. The first post office in South Elgin was established in 1838. In 1861, the United States acquired Illinois from Mexico and South Elgin became part of the new state. During World War I, South Elgin served as a munitions depot for the Allied war effort. After the war, the town experienced a period of growth and prosperity. In the 1960s, however,South Elgin began to experience a decline in population due to factors such as drugs and crime. Since 2000, however, SouthElgin has seen an increase in development activity that has led to its current renaissance status.
