South Elgin, Illinois is a small town located in the northwestern corner of Cook County, Illinois. The population was 7,868 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The town was organized on March 14, 1853 as a result of a petition filed by citizens of nearby Aurora Heights and Union Township. The name "Elgin" originates from an Indian word meaning "place where there are trees." The first settler in South Elgin was Nicholas Pohlman who arrived in 1847. He built his home on what is now Main Street. A second settler, John Hetzner also arrived in 1847 and built a house on North Broadway. In 1860, Nathan Swardt bought land east of Main Street and began to build homes. In 1865, he donated land to the town for a public school system which would eventually become known as South Elgin High School (now South Elgin Community College). In 1870-71, local resident George Wessels erected a large frame building which served as the first courthouse in the township. The building still stands today and is used as storage space for county government offices. A store opened up in 1895 by J.Hertz & Sons lumber merchants and has been serving the community ever since. In 1907-08, donations were made by Mrs John Fenton to construct a new wing on both sides of Main Street which became known as "the Fenton Building". This wing is still standing today and houses many businesses such as Burger King and Sears departments within its walls! In 1923-24, money was raised through bake sales to finance construction of a water tower that would serve the community well into the 20th century! Today it remains one of South Elgin's most important landmarks!
