Skokie, Illinois is a city located in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 146,898 at the 2010 census. Skokie is the most populous municipality in Cook County and it is one of the five local governments that make up Chicago. It lies on the northwest side of Chicago and straddles the border between Lake Michigan to its north and Forest Park to its south. The first Europeans to visit what is now Skokie were French explorers in 1624-25 who charted their way through what are now Kane and McHenry counties. Jesuit Father Jacques Marquette explored this area in 1673-74 when he was exploring for a fur trade route from Canada to Japan. In 1815, during the Mexican–American War, General Samuel J. Butler captured Fort Dearborn near present-day Skokie as part of his attempt to open up Lake Michigan for commerce with Mexico. A group of ten men led by Captain John Fitzgerald settled at what is now West Side Highway (Highway 57) in 1816; they named their community after General Butler's headquarters at Fort Dearborn (now downtown Chicago). At first the small town consisted of just a few buildings around a courthouse square; but growth proceeded rapidly as new settlers came streaming into skookum territory from all over northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin during those early years. By 1836 there were more than two hundred BUSINESSES OPERATING IN SKOKIE INCorporated! During much of the 19th century,Skokie was an agricultural center with dryland farming predominant; however, since World War II it has become an industrial center with many manufacturing businesses locating here including Windello Plastics (formerly Alcoa), KimberlyClark (formerly Ciba-Geigy), Intel Xeon Processor Chipset Manufacturing Company LLC., McCormick & Co., Hormel Foods Incorporated, Emerson Electric Company and many others! The city experienced rapid growth following World War II thanks in part to several major federal programs which helped promote heavy industry: National Defense Industrial Recovery Act - which created Area 51 on Islip Road - Executive Order 9150 - which called forthe development of hundreds of new industrial parks throughout America -and Federal Aid Program Noeman – administered by USDA under provisions of Public Law 86-564
One of the earliest scopes was a viewing instrument made by Nicholas-Jacques Conte and Jean-Baptiste Lecoq in 1795. It consisted of a cylindrical mirror with a convex lens on one end and a flexible tube on the other, connected to an armature which rotated. The use of such instruments was very primitive, and they were only used for hunting small animals or looking at targets at close range. The first true astronomical telescopes were built by Englishmen in the early 18th century. These were large, complex devices that comprised two or more mirrors and three lenses arranged in an equilateral triangle. Aperture had to be made large enough so that all light could be brought into the telescope, while also accommodating for winds which would cause movement of the mirrors and lenses. Although it took many years for these new telescopes to become available to astronomers around the world, they eventually became quite important in helping us understand the universe better than ever before. By understanding how stars interact with one another, we have been able to make significant advances in our understanding of celestial mechanics and astrophysics.

Skokie is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 27,429 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cook County and home to the Chicago Bears (NFL team) football stadium. The first inhabitants of what is now Skokie were a Native American tribe known as the Potawatomi. A post office called "Skokie" was established in 1835, and became a town on November 3, 1859. At that time it had a population of only 4 people. In 1870, John Pemberton founded Peabody Coal and Coke Company in nearby Carbondale with land he had bought from the Potawatomi tribe. The company soon became one of Illinois's largest landowners and built manymlhouses in Skokie. In 1904, Skokie annexed part of neighbouring Randolph Township; this annexation greatly increased its population because Randolph Township lacked any central business district or school district like Skokie did. In 1916–17, when Illinois instituted Prohibition*, residents voted to put an end to prohibition by referendum; they were successful and alcohol production ceased in Skokie*. After World War II ended, most businesses closed down due to falling demand for products made in wartime Germany* (* By contrast, companies such as Ford Motor Company continued operations until the early 1970s). However, some small businesses managed to keep going thanks to friendly competition and marketing by local officials.* *Since then however liquor sales have gradually declined throughout Cook County
Skokie was first settled by the Ingersoll family in 1847. The Skokie post office was established in 1851, and the town was named for John F. Skokie, a Representative from Illinois. The first school in Skokie was built in 1857, and the first church was founded in 1861. The town became an incorporated village in 1927.
