Skokie, Illinois is a city located in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 71,814 at the 2010 census. It is the third most populous city in Chicago and the seventh most populous city in Illinois. The Skokie metropolitan area had an estimated population of 1,527,815 as of July 1, 2016. The first Europeans to visit what is now Skokie were French missionaries in 1763. They built a fur trading post on the riverbank near present day Glen Ellyn and named it "Rochester." The town was platted in 1847 by Peter Krieger and James Caldwell as part of a large ranching investment near Buffalo Grove and Northbrook. The name derived from a Native American word meaning "place where deer run." In 1853, John J. Bourke founded what would become Midwestern Railroad Company with his brother William Bourke to build a line between Chicago and Warsaw, Indiana. In 1856 the company completed its path through Skokie and donated land for municipal incorporation. On November 4 of that year the first election held under Municipal Act No.. 2 passed by voters demonstrated strong support for incorporation; Skokie became one of the five cities in Cook County (then but now suburban Chicago) to be incorporated on January 1st following passage of that act by then-Governor Richard M. Daley . On October 15th 1870 Amos Kendall purchased 8 acres (3 ha) east ofpresent day Winfield Avenue from George Tilton for $275 ($10 per acre). Kendall formed a partnership with Nicholas Biddle (another early settler) to develop this land into what would later become known as Kendall Park neighborhood; it was organized as village on May 16th 1871 following approval by an act of Congress which authorized creation of villages within five hundred square miles (1,500 km2). A different origin story has been given for Kendall's initial donation - he offered 100 acres (40 ha) called "Kendall Prairie" to Abraham Lincoln after seeing him ride his horse around Prospect Park during dinner at Mr Lincoln's home on April 14th 1865 while he was president . Skokie, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 21,902 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Skokie was founded in 1847 by Captain George Washington Boggs and his family as a small farming community on the north side of Chicago. The first post office was established in 1851 and the first store opened in 1853. The name "Skokie" comes from one of Captain Boggs' children, who called his father's farm 'Skokie'. In 1860, John Pritzker bought the farm for $5,000 and renamed it North Side Farms after himself and his brothers-in-law from Germany who had come to America to help their parents run their business. By 1870, North Side Farms had outgrown its original location and began expanding into what is now Skokie Township. By 1880, Pritzker had built eight frame houses on what are now Griggs Road (now Dempster Road) near present-day Northwestern University. A local store started being operated by J[ohn] W[illiam] H[einrich], which became known as H & J's Grocery before becoming an anchor tenant at Northwestern University's campus grocery store known as Nordstrom's Department Store in 1911. In 1924 Skokie annexed neighboring villages of West LaSalle (now Lemont) and South Holland (now Plainfield). On November 3rd 1929 residents voted to annex Morenci instead due to concerns about water shortages caused by World War II military buildups along the border with Italy
