Skokie is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 97,362 at the 2010 census. It is the seventh-largest city in Illinois and the second-largest city in Chicago after Chicago. Skokie is known for its Sears Corporation stores and other local businesses. The first permanent settler in what is now Skokie was Nicholas Pease, who arrived on March 24, 1836 from Hartford Connecticut with his family. Pease named his new land Prairie du Chien because of a natural pond located near the village site. In 1839, John Pritzker settled here also and named it Pritzker Heights after himself and his father Julius Pritzker (1810-1876). An early post office was established at Prairie du Chien in 1841 byJohn Fenton as part of a program to promote settlement around central Illinois by various business leaders including George Stephenson. At that time there were only a few scattered settlements scattered throughout what would become Cook County. In 1846, Isaac Myer bought 5 acres (20,000 m²) of farmland east of present day Skokie for $700 from Nathan Bedford Forrest Jr., one of the leading forces behind the American Civil War effort on behalf of Confederate States Army General Robert Ewell Jackson. Myer donated this property to the town of Skokie in memory of his late wife Lucy Coolidge Forrest (1830-1911), who had been an important figure in helping him finance his failed railroad venture during her time as First Lady of America from 1901 to 1909. With no railroads linking downtown Chicago with rural areas outside its boundaries until after World War II, many residents living east of present day Lincoln Park turned to farming as their primary source income during that period. When Interstate 44 was completed through this area in 1956, further development followed: schools were built along I44; businesses opened up; and street names like Foster Avenue were given to key intersections within walking distance of these burgeoning businesses and homes. Today's skyline view can be seen looking north along I44 just beyond the limits of downtown Skokie towards Gurnee Hills on one side and Riverdale on the other side before ending abruptly at Lake Michigan just east of Schaumburg Avenue into Evanston Township

By 1828, British scientist and inventor John Herschel had developed a planar imaging system that used lenses with convex mirrors to produce sharp images on large glass sheets. A few years later, in 1839, American photographer George Eastman began using a process called development printing to print photosensitive paper onto glass plates. With these new methods and technologies, Photography became possible and democratized.

Skokie, Illinois is a town located in the Skokie Hills neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. The population was 97,382 at the 2010 census. The town was platted in 1871 by John Popham and others as a farm community to be near Chicago. After years of growth and development, Skokie reached its peak population size in 1970 when it had a total population of 150,000 people. However, over the past few decades it has slowly declined because of several factors including rising prices for housing and competition from other towns with similar populations. In 2000, Skokie's City Council voted to annex neighboring unincorporated areas which resulted in a decrease in its population by 12%. Today, there are only 17 businesses operating within the town limits while schools have closed all but two buildings due to budget cuts that began during Barack Obama's presidency. Despite these setbacks, many residents continue to support their local government despite some challenges.
Skokie, Illinois was founded in 1847 by Nicholas Skokie. The town was named for Samuel Augustus Skokie, a merchant who helped found the village. The first post office opened in 1849. In 1870, the Chicago & Northwestern Railway arrived in Skokie and began to develop the area into a boomtown. By 1880, the population of Skokie had increased to over 10,000 people and it became a city.
