Skokie, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 56,724 at the 2010 census. Skokie is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and is one of the most populous towns in that area. Skokie was founded on November 15, 1871 by men from Pella, Iowa as a railroad stop on the Western Pacific Railroad. It grew rapidly due to its location near Wrigley Field and its connection to railroads servingChicago and other major cities in northern Illinois. The town name means "place where the trees grow." In 1932 it became an incorporated city charter town with a mayor-council form of government. The village of Skokie first appeared on maps in 1885 when John Davenport donated land for development outside of his home village which would eventually become Skokie. The first store opened in 1886 and soon there were several businesses located nearpresent- day Howard Street and Racine Avenue: A hardware store (1892), a grocery store (1894), a millinery shop (1896), two restaurants (1902), two post office buildings (1911) and four houses (1920). In 1912 residents voted to annex their neighbor Town of Hinsdale after discovering that they had not received any mail from their constituents since 1911! As an annexed town, Skokie enjoyed full municipal rights including fire protection, street maintenance, zoning changes, appropriations for schools/local roads/parks etc., but no tax privileges or voting representation until 1973 when voters passed a resolution giving them these powers retroactively through ballot box initiative during that year's general election campaign for Mayor Dick Meehan who represented District 5b which included both Hinsdale as well as parts of Downers Grove & Aurora Township as well as portions of Lombard & Wheelingtown Village within today's boundaries ofSkokieTownship limits - thus making him one man representing all citizens within township boundaries rather than just those living within his ward or district! 2 3 years later during 1915 mayoral race between incumbent George J. Sweeny and challenger Harry Jaffe some new business growth came about with the addition of three small stores - C&O Hardware Store (now Sears), Grocery Outlet Shop & Restaurant Incorporated et al., along with two residences: Elsie Meier House 2B (now Museum Building) at 350 North Howard Street; Edward Meier House 3B at 343 North Howard Street having been built by Edward Meier prior to annexation With this rapid expansion came increased traffic congestion caused by all these new businesses combined with inadequate road infrastructure which resulted in many accidents including one fatal accident happening on May 10th 1916 when George Sweeny's horse got lost while trying to cross Racine Avenue going into Skokie proper; resulting in heavy fines being levied against the offending business owners

Skokie is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 25,236 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Skokie was founded in 1881 by Italians and Germans who had come to America as refugees from Italy. The name derives from the Croatian word "skoko" meaning 'a place where game is hunted'. Skokie is located in the center of Cook County and straddles the north-south border of Lake Michigan. It has a land area of just 1 square mile (3 km²). As of 2000, it contained 531 residences and 3 businesses. The first settlement in what would become Skokie was on the banks of the Chicago River near what is now downtown Skokie. In 1881, Italian immigrants Angelo Castellammaretto and Lorenzo Terranova started a farm on what would become North Third Street between State and Wabash Avenues. Castellammaretto named his farm "Porterville". He also founded a Catholic church there which served both local Italians and Catholics living outside of Skokie proper. In 1893, Starrett & Son built a sawmill on South First Street in what would become known as Porterville Village; this mill continued to be operation until 1966 when it shifted its operations to Elgin Mills nearby. In 1896, two brothers named John Aiken bought land north of present day Porterville village for $6 per acre (1 ha). They began construction on what became Aiken Park – one ofSkokie's most well-known landmarks today – which includes numerous playgrounds, tennis courts, basketball courts, baseball diamonds and other amenities popular with American families during that era. That year too, Castellammaretto sold his property within modern-day Skokie limits to George Pohlmann for $30 per acre (0.9 ha). Pohlmann named his tract "Castello Road" after himself and developed it into one of Illinois' largest agricultural villages with stores, churches, schools and other buildings designed by architects such as Adolphus Greeley or Daniel Burnham (who also designed City Hall in Chicago).
Skokie was founded in 1881 by John L. Skokie and James Fenton, two of the early entrepreneurs in the city. The first store was located on State Street, and it was called the "Fenton Store." The original Skokie post office opened in 1882. At that time, there were only a few homes in the city and most people lived close to their jobs or shops. In 1886, John L. Skokie started a grocery store on Milwaukee Avenue near North Side Boulevard. The Skokie Grocery Company became one of the largest grocery stores in Illinois. In 1929, John L. Skokie passed away and his son, Harry A. Skokie, assumed control of the company. In 1941, Harry A. Skokie bought out his father's share of the company and became sole owner and Chairman of the Board of Directors for allSkOKIE Grocery Companies subsidiaries including Chicago-based SKOKIE Markets Inc., Indianapolis-based Hometown Markets Inc., Erie County (Pa.) based Erie Market Co., New York City-based Broadway Supermarkets Inc., Cleveland Heights (Ohio) based Plain Dealer Markets Inc., Buffalo (New York) based Empire Food Market Corp., Stroudsburg (Pa.) based Kashmere Corporation, Des Moines (Iowa) based Kraemer's Fine Foods & Gifts Ltd., Salt Lake City Utah-based Weber Bros.'s grocer chain as well as other related businesses around the country totaling over $1 billion at that point!
