In 1865, immigrants from Hungary founded Ferencvárosi Váradi Népzetek Kft., commonly called "the Hungarians", which began producing cheese near present-day Lombard Street and Western Avenue; they soon opened a factory at North Glenview Avenue near Belmont Boulevard. Other early settlers included Solomon Abrahams (1827–1904), who operated an flour mill at 157th Street and Western Avenue; Michael Ryan (1864–1949), who ran a grocery store near present-day West Suburban Drive and State Street; George Ballou (1868–1954), who operated a bakery next topresent day Wilson Roadand Sheridan Road; Cornelius Greeley (1871–1945), born Cornelius Caulfield Greeley Sr.; Samuel Weiser (1879–1964); Edward Mapes (died 1951); Julius Petersen (1900–1974). An act to establish public schools within this new township was passed by the General Assembly on November 5, 1870: "An Act to Establish Public Schools Within The Township Of Skokie." On December 7, 1870 – one month after passage of this act – Frederick Pohl arrived from Germany with his family to start Pohl’s Flour Mills here at 158th Street & Western Ave., which became known as Pohl’s Mills Factory #2 after he took over management from his father upon Frederick Pohl’s death in 1907.. Pohl also founded Pohl’s ice cream parlor at 140th & Milwaukee avenues where it continued until 1984 when it closed because of economic problems associated with high energy prices made possible by deregulation of America's food industry.. Families such as these created businesses that sustainedSkokie through hard times - something that has not always been easy or common elsewhere.. One particularly successful business run by Germans during these difficult times was Frankfurter AG - once one of Illinois' largest commercial enterprises - which manufactured pet food products until 1984 ..... In recent years there have been efforts to bring back some old businesses including Fred Meyer's department store which closed down about 15 years ago but reopened last year across from Elmhurst High School
Skokie was founded in 1879 by John H. Skokie and his brother, George. The brothers developed the town on the Illinois Central Railroad line between Chicago and Milwaukee. The original town was named after a nearby hill, Skokie Summit. In 1881, the town became a city when it merged with the neighboring Town of Kenilworth.
