Skokie began as a small farming community home to about 100 residents in 1871 when three brothers donated land for development into what would become skokytea (now known as skokia). At first only men could own land in this early period and most businesses were operated by men alone such as cultivation and storage operations for local farmers; blacksmithing also took place here until prohibition made this activity illegal. However over time women started owning property and many businesses opened up around these early days including two churches - both built by Germans who had come to America during the 19th century searching for opportunity and religious growth within their new homeland - one Presbyterian and one Catholic which together served 1,,000 residents before they closed down during prohibitionskokia had largely been abandoned by these newcomers butsaw potential for redevelopment In 1886 Rev J P Jarvis founded what would be called "The Jarvis School"aserching his education while living near Cottage Grove IL where he taught school before moving to Lombard IL to found Wabash Bible College In 1901 he met his future wife Mable Andrade from Lombard who worked at Northwestern Mutual Insurance Company at that time as vice president In 1902 they moved to Skokie where Rev Jarvis established "The First Presbyterian Church" now known as Our Lady Of Mount Carmel Parish HallIt wasn't until 1907 however that Reverend Jarvis purchased "The Second Presbyterian Church" later renamed "St John's Episcopal Church". In 1915 Reverend Jarvis sold his church interest in Skokie Heights to Dr Burt Haggerty who conducted research into methods improving milk production on large scale farms becomingoneofthe founding fathersof modern food processing technologyinSKOKIE HEIGHTS THEY WERE SOLD TO THE GAS KARGOYNE COMPANY IN 1948FOR $2 MILLION BUT BEFORE THAT SKOKIKE HAD BEEN A COMMUNITY OFGEORGE MASON FAMILY OWNERS AND MANUFACTURERS OF GOOD FOOD PRODUCTS

In 1865, a school was built by subscription and soon became an important source of education for the surrounding villages and towns. In 1876, Iron Mountain Railroad came through town connecting with Chicago to the north; this new development increased business for Pohlman's store and also stimulated population growth which made it easy for people to find jobs in nearby businesses such as florists, grocery stores and auto dealerships (now known as Midway) on North Avenue near Wilson Road. This area nowincludes parts of Glenview Heights neighbourhood and Randolph neighbourhood). One of Skokie’s most significant residents during its early years was John Fenton who served as Mayor from 1895-1901 before leaving to run for Congress from Illinois’ 3rd District (then representing Cook County including Skokie). Others who had an impact on early Skokie include Judge Daniel Akers who served as City Attorney from 1888 until 1893; Dr Gurdon Dickson who founded St Joseph Hospital; Mr Theodore Roosevelt whose family lived here when he was mayor (he moved into his presidential mansion 1 mile away after leaving office in 1911); Mrs Alice Paulina Robbessen who ran unsuccessfully for Congress in 1916; Wm Haggerty Sr., president of American Canning Company Limited which opened a cannery on State Street adjacent to Park Lake where today’s McCormick Place Shopping Centre stands; Rev A C Clifford pastor of Sacred Heart Catholic Church located on Superior Street between Wacker Drive & Damen Boulevard during prohibition era skokieneople@gmail
