Skokie was founded on November 1, 1868 as a small village by John Sibley and his family. In 1870, John Sibley donated two acres (0.40 km²) of land to the Village of Skokie for its growth; this parcel now forms part of the eastern border of downtown Skokie. The first post office was established in 1870 at 1111 N State Street; it served as an until 1876 when it moved to 5th & State Streets. In 1892-93, J P O'Neill built a sawmill on what is now south side of Route 56 near present day Hinsdale Road; this mill supplied lumber for much of Skokie's early development. The first bridge over I-55 was also built soon after – just east of Hinsdale Road across from Uptown Park – connecting Skokie with Evanston to the south and North Side with Dearborn Heights to the north (the present day Logan Square neighborhood). In 1915-16, when Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company moved into its new building at 601 Wabash Avenue in nearby Westchester Township, it set up shop right next door to Skokie's first post office; this then became known as Northwestern Mutual Place or simply "NoHo". skokia@northern mutualllc@gmail.com
