Skokie is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 72,574 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Skokie is located in the northwest corner of Cook County and shares borders with Cicero to the north, Barrington to the east, Elmhurst to the south and Westchester to the west. The first Europeans to visit what is now Skokie were French traders who passed through in 1774 when they were looking for new land for their colony of Quebec. They called it "Nipigon". A post office was established here on November 10, 1836, and named after Captain John Doane of the United States Navy's USS Constitution ship which had been lost at sea off Nipigon on July 12, 1835. In 1839–1840 an oil well was drilled by John Dolan in what would become Skokie Township; this well became known as Dolan Well No. 1 because it was discovered first. The first village founded in what are now Skokie Township was called Roundabout (now South Side) because there were several roundabouts around where early settlers lived and worked during those years before roads were built across most of rural Cook County. The township formed on February 14th, 1847 from a portion of DuPage County including parts of today's Elmhurst and Cicero townships. Prior to that date all lands within present-daySkokie Township were owned by individuals or families who paid taxes mainly for use of public land inside their township limits: hunting rights etc., which then belonged not just to them but also their kinfolk outside its boundaries . On February 14th only one family - Thatchers - had property within present-daySkokie Township boundary: patriarch Isaac Thatcher Jr.'s heirs received a tract along Rte 63 near Waukegan as part of a gift from James Kappler Sr., brother-in-law and uncle of Mayor Michael Jankowski (D). Other than that very few people ever bought or sold property within defined boundaries – mainly due largely to lack thereof transportation options given distances between villages/townships and larger settlements elsewhere in Cook County These days surface transportation is much easier so there may be more remaining examples . But even without easy access most residents live close enough either walking or biking 3 hours into downtown Chicago each way just for shopping ) One such example is Crystal City Shopping Center @ Clark Rd./Lake Shore Drive; 2 miles away from downtown Chicago! A post office operated at Roundabout until May 6th 1918 when it changed its name to Park Ridge because that's where General Electric's experimental research lab stood at that time – no longer extant today but still represented by an impressive modern structure on State Road 59 near Glendale Hills ). When Park Ridge closed its doors forever some mail continued being delivered via horse drawn carts until 1955 when electric delivery became possible through Lake Shore Drive’s Stephenson Street stop — providing an easy means for everyone living nearby not just city Dwellers ! In 1957 park Ridge Elementary School was opened adjacent to Stevenson Street stop giving children living too far away access tc school . And finally our current location thank goodness !! After over 60 years you can still smell Oldskoke Oilfield fragrance coming from old wells near your house

With continued growth came more needs like increased streetlights for safety during night time; More storage capacity for villagers' goods & equipment located at various locations within & around their villages'; Better sewage treatment systems available on site due to advances made since the early 1800s through technology advancements such as gas-, electric- & water-powered shoveling machines that could clear snowdrifts quickly while avoiding damage to pipes etc.; addition of several restaurants/bars along with daycare centers necessary for increasing housing stock throughout what had once been an all agricultural community; skating rinks becoming popular among locals during this time period making it easier access to ice during winter months thereby reducing traffic congestion on streets near rink entrances etc.; finally amusement park attractions becoming available nearby such as Six Flags Over Illinois which opened its doors on November 5th 1934 just four miles away from downtown Skokie!

The first settler in the area was Nicholas Wirth who arrived in 1857. At the time, it was a part of the County of Cook. In 1861, the Town of Skokie was organized and became a city by merging with neighboring towns - Elgin and West Chicago. On November 3rd, 1907, Skokie annexation by DuPage county completed.
