In 1951, Skokie residents founded the T-shirt Manufacturing Company as a way to help promote gun safety. The company made and sold shirts that read "Firearm safe! Keep your family safe." At first, these shirts were only meant for adults who lived in the city; however, over time they have been reprinted and worn by children throughout Cook County (the county around Chicago). The popularity of these t-shirts has helped contribute to gun education across America and has also created a sense of community around firearm safety. Today, Skokie remains home to one of the most well known firearm manufacturers in the world- Glock Incorporated. On December 14, 1868, the first firearm manufacturer in Illinois was opened by George H. Smith and company in Skokie, Illinois. The factory manufactured rifles and pistols for the military and law enforcement markets. On January 1, 1889, Smith & Wesson Firearms Corporation was organized with a capital of $1 million. This corporation became one of the most successful firearms companies in America. In 1934, Smith & Wesson merged with American Arms Company to form Winchester Incorporated.
Skokie, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois. The population was 145,562 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cook County and one of the five cities in Chicago metropolitan area. Skokie was founded in 1871 as a small town on the edge of what is now Lake Michigan. In 1962, it became an urban village and in 2000, it became a city with a total population of 205,845. It lies just east of downtown Chicago on the northern border of Cook County. The first people to settled in Skokie were Germans who arrived around 1795. They built logging cabins along the north bank of the Kankakee River until 1800 when they moved to what is now Northfield Village on the south side of Chicago and started farming rice and corn. In 1871, Englishman John Prentice bought 3 acres (1 km2) near present-day Skokie from German farmers for $5 per acre (0.24 ha). By 1876, he had developed what would become known as Prenticeville into a small town with about 100 residents. The following year, he sold most of his land to other settlers and began building homes there himself including those that still stand today such as Griggs Hall and Ardmore House. In 1862, after much discussion among local officials over whether or not to become an urban village – which would have granted city rights – Skokie voted against doing so but did agree to allow annexation by nearby rich neighborhoods like Norridge (which later merged into Chicago). In 2000, after more than two decades as an unincorporated community within Cook County boundaries – including two years during which no municipal elections were held because its charter allowed only single-member districts – Skokie became itself a full-fledged municipality with a total population exceeding 205,845 (). As part of this changeover process it merged with neighboring villages such as Norridge and Homan Heights to form one complex community that continues today to enjoy high levels of social trust both within its own borders and across those adjacent jurisdictions

Skokie, Illinois is a city located in the northwest corner of Cook County, Illinois, on the South Side of Chicago. The population was 96,719 as of 2010. Skokie was founded in 1871 by John A. Skokie and his brother-in-law George H. Smith as a small farming community on the shores of Lake Michigan near what is now Northwest Side Chicago. The early settlers were Irish Catholic farmers from County Cork who built their homes with bricks and mortar from scratch. The city became an important manufacturing center after World War II when manufacturers such as McDonnell Douglas and Ford moved to Skokie from other parts of the Midwest. In recent decades, however, Skokie's economy has been based largely on its location within Chicago'souterLoop district and its relationship with Chicagoland's largest employer, General Motors Company (GMC). Skokie also contains two well-known shopping malls: One located in Downers Grove and one located in Evanston.
Skokie was first settled in 1847 by the Skokie brothers. The original settlers were from Holland and they named the town after their home country. The town began to grow rapidly after it was incorporated as a village in 1865.
