In 1919 he married Alice McCarthy who also came from County Clare, Ireland but they resided in Park Ridge for many years before moving to their present location near McCormick Road & Kankakee Avenue where they lived until their death in 1966. In 1931skokia hired its first black employee - Willie Boggs who worked at the Post Office until 1942 when he joined the UAW Local 822 union organizing drive against white supremacy within American Motors Corporation (AMC). He eventually won a major victory over racism when AMC closed its plants outside Detroit without giving blacks equal access to employment or benefits like those enjoyed by whites within that city’s auto industry! skokia awarded him its “Employee ofthe Year” award in 1943! skokia also made history hiring Jackie Robinson as its first black clerk/later manager/presidential candidate during 1948’s election campaign!

Skokie, Illinois is a city in the west-central part of Chicago, on the banks of the Willa Lake. It was founded in 1847 by John and Anna Skokie. The population was 17,562 at the 2010 census. Skokie is located within Cook County. The first residents of what would become Skokie were farmers who prospected for lead and other minerals near their farmstead on the south side of Willa Lake. A post office was established at the site in 1847, and mail service began operations from Rock Island in 1851. The name "Skokie" originated with one of these early settlers, John Skokie, who named his property after his hometown of Slovak Village in Hungary. settlement continued to grow slowly until large numbers arrived during the late 19th century as a result of America's railway boom. By 1900, there were over 12,000 people living in Skokie proper and its satellite communities; this growth was due mostly to railroads which brought jobs and housing developments closer to downtown Chicago (then just a small village). During World War I (1914-18), much effort went into developing munitions manufacturing facilities in nearby Willowbrook Park; however, because war production relied largely on American materials shipped through Canada and Europe, few products resulted from these endeavors. In 1923–24SkOKIE organized its first town meeting—an event that served as an early prototype for today's City Council system. This Town Meeting resolution called for reorganization of government services so that all citizens could "participate fully as equals." In 1933–34the City Council passed an ordinance establishing zoning regulations which limited land use to single-family homes only; this ordinance remain unchanged until it was repealed by Mayor Richard Jordsen in 1984 following passage of local legislation allowing mixed Use development within limits prescribed by zoning ordinances dating back to before 1933! No one explanation can account for all aspects related to SkOKIE’s unique history: From pioneer settler JOHN SKOKI’s choice of name for his new community – “SKOKI INDIANS WALKING TOWARDS THE WILKES” – through successive waves OF AMERICAN & CANADIAN INDUSTRIES THAT COMBINED TO MAKE SKOKIE THE NUMBER ONE CITY FOR FARMERS BACK THEN (& TODAY) THERE IS SOMETHING ABOUT THIS CITY THAT JUST MAKES IT GREAT!
Skokie was founded in 1877 by John Skokie and his wife, Mary. The town was named after the then current location of a manufacturing plant of Skokie Watch Company. In 1911, it became a city and in 1964, it became an independent municipality. The population of Skokie peaked at over 100,000 residents in 1960 but declined to around 60,000 by 2014.
