After winning World War I America needed new weapons so they produced The National Firearms Act which allowed manufacturers to produce handguns without prior licensing and required a background check on all gun buyers(Foley). This law allowed Americans to purchase firearms without having any idea about what they were buying(Wright). The next major event occurred during World War II when America went into war again with Nazi Germany. American munitions manufacturers quickly responded by producing weapons such as tanks, planes and ships; all of which played an important role in both wars(Lentz). After World War II ended America gained control over many European firearms companies so they could produce new types of ammo such as pistol ammo (.22LR caliber)and rifle ammo (.308 Winchester caliber) which helped increase firepower for American troops stationed overseas(Dixon). In 1862, Republic Steel Works opened in what is now the northwest corner of Skokie and Pulaski Streets; it became one of the largest steel plants in America. In 1915, Armour National Corporation moved its headquarters from Chicago to Skokie after buying a site from Jardine Matheson & Company; this made Armour one of the largest employers in town. The Staley-Ford Motor Company plant opened in 1920 adjacent to Republic Steel Works; this made Staley one of the top manufacturers of cars and trucks in America. The Plastics Industries Research Corporation (PIRC) building which housed PARC until 1984 was used as headquarters for several large American companies such as Dow Corning and DuPont before being sold to Northrop Grumman for $500 million dollars on November 21st 2006 In 1990s many small businesses started up throughout downtown region due to lack of competition within larger companies such as McDonald's and Walgreens heirs between those two chains had been expanding rapidly into various suburbs throughout Illinois since they acquired more than 60% ownership interests respectivey across numerous communities throughout Cook County during late 1980s early 1990s expansions phase following divestitures or takeovers by Big Threechains

Skokie is a village in Cook County, Illinois, located on the west side of the Chicago metropolitan area. The population was 67,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicagoland metropolitan area. Skokie was founded in 1847 and incorporated as a village in 1901. It became a city in 1963. Skokie's earliest settlers were Irish immigrants who arrived in 1847. They erected small log cabins and began to farm the land that now makes up downtown Skokie. The first post office was established in 1851, and by 1865 there were two churches and nine schools within the village proper. In 1881, railroad entrepreneur George Pullman donated land for what would become downtown Skokie, making it one of Chicago's most affluent neighborhoods. By 1900, however, steel production had begun to take off in Chicago, causing prices for timber to fall; this caused many farms to go bankrupt or be sold off to developers; Skokoia remained largely rural until after World War II when suburbanization began to pick up pace throughout Illinois (and other states). During World War II, local businesses produced munitions and components for military weapons plants across North America; however, few people lived within the city limits due to high taxes levied against residents by landlords (who could sell their properties back onto residents at low prices). This situation changed once Japan entered World War II because everyone living within city limits had access to arms factories while those outside of it did not – this led to increased conflict between inhabitants of both cities as well as between Japanese-owned businesses inside and outside of Skokie and African Americans working on plantations near downtown – which eventually led to integration efforts within both cities during postwar years (see also Race/ethnicity diagram below). The Village of Skokie was established on November 3, 1871, by a group of farmers who chose to move from their original home in Ravenswood Township in Kane County. The first post office was established at the former Mr. Kapp's farm on February 12, 1872. The village became an incorporated municipality on January 15, 1934. Skokie is located within the Chicago–Northwestern Passenger Railroad (CNWP) commuter rail station district and is served by two CNWP trains per hour from downtown Chicago.
