Shorewood, Illinois is a small town located in Cook County, Illinois. As of the 2010 census, the population was 7,717. Shorewood is known for its lake and golf course properties. The village has a total area of 0.3 square miles (0.8 km²). The first people to live in what is now Shorewood were farmers who cultivated corn and beans on their land. In 1835, the first post office was established inshore in what is now Prairie View A&M University. However, it did not stay open very long because there were few residents to serve. The first schoolteacher moved to Shorewood from Decatur in 1836 and started teaching students at a farmhouse on Saginaw Road which is still standing today as an official school building. In 1849, John Prentice built a sawmill on his property that would soon become one of the most important businesses in town. By 1860, there were over 20 businesses located along Saginaw Road and about 30 homes with businesses included grocery stores, saddlery shops, cotton gins and other mills. In 1870-71 Moody & Moody erected a two-story frame library/grange house with an addition for classrooms that served as the nucleus for future Shorewood High School (now Prairie View A&M University). That same year also saw the opening of the first post office within shorewood limits when Fenton Pike was connected by railroad to Chicago through Joliet so mail could be delivered more efficiently here than via stagecoach or wagon ride across country! In 1876-77 Irving Jarrell constructed a large lumberyard on what is now Prentice Boulevard which became one of town's leading employers during this time period due to its ability to produce high quality lumber at low prices.. With this new source of income came new development such as residences being built near where industry was situated while business districts grew closer together making it easier for residents to get around without having too many stops between them; something that would continue into the 21st century! In 1886-87 Wofford Bros., manufacturers of bicycles and other hardware products relocated from Peoria to build their largest facility yet east of Chicago – also known as “the factory” – located off State Street just north of present day First Avenue North! Shorewood is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 41,822 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what is now Shorewood was Nicholas Pritzker in 1836. He and his family moved to the town from their home on the north side of Chicago. The Pritzkers were among the earliest settlers in what would become Shorewood and are buried there along with other early pioneers such as Isaac Sargent, John Butters and others who made up what would be known as "The Old North Side". Shorewood's beginnings can be traced to 1846 when it was organized as a village under the name of "Waldorf." After years of development by its founders, including one of Illinois' most important political figures - Mayor John Hagee - Waldorf became an incorporated city on April 14, 1872 following approval by a vote of its citizens. In 1907, during the midst of World War I, more than 10% of all new residential construction in Cook County took place within boundaries that included Shorewood; it was then that amalgamation became possible after each community voted to join together. In 1922-23, following annexation into Chicagoland proper by Aurora (then Rockford), Shorewood lost much if not all its manufacturing jobs due to automation and other similar forces – yet through steady effort over time managed nonetheless to maintain some degree of vitality for both residents and businesses alike; this resurgence helped crew Harbor Drive – once lined with row houses dating back to 1840 – from being one long strip mall into something approaching an arterial road with shopping centers (+ several recent housing developments) on one side and large industrial areas on another near its centerline. But even today there are times when things seem more rough around these parts: late last year local officials enacted rules limiting how often people could park their cars without first having them towed; while also recently approving applications for a second potable water line direcdy across Dundee Road (the former routing for Highway 60) just south of Harbor Drive – making shorewood arguably becoming only slightly less ghettoized than ever before despite recent efforts by city leaders to attract higher-end businesses and services thereto). On October 15, 1847, the first railroad in Shorewood was built. The Illinois Central Railroad bought the track from the Chicago and Rock Island Railroad.
