As the first town in Cook County, Shorewood was a center of firearms activity dating back to 1847. Not only did this provide opportunity for local gunsmiths and hunters to sell their products, but also it allowed for the development of a strong militia system. In 1872, Shorewood became the home of the Illinois State Armory, which helped spawn a number of other firearm-related businesses and institutions over the years. Today, Shorewood is home to several museums and organizations dedicated to firearm history, including the Illinois State Armory Museum and Park, which is open daily from 10am-5pm; The Gunnery School at Harbor Lights Naval Air Station; and The NRA Missouri Valley Branch Headquarters.

The Shorewood holster company was founded in 1892 by Luther H. West and his brother-in-law, Julius I. Werkman. The company was started as a leather goods store on the east side of Chicago. In 1895, the company moved to its current location on Randolph Street in Shorewood. The company became known for their high quality holsters and revolvers. Holsters from the Shorewood holster company are still in use today and are considered to be some of the best made holsters available.
Shorewood, Illinois is a small town in Cook County, Illinois. The population was 3,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Shorewood is located on the western edge of Cook County and borders the city of Chicago to its south and west. To its north are the unincorporated communities of Maywood, Humboldt Park, and Wood Dale. The first permanent settler in what became Shorewood was John Wentworth in 1837. He built a cabin on a bend in the Fox River and named it Wentworth Harbor after his home county, England. In 1845, George Aiken bought land east of where Wentworth Harbor now stands from Joshua Speedman for $1 per acre. Aiken called his new community White Marsh because he wanted to attract white settlers who would help him build homes on his new landrace. In 1846 Samuel Morse founded Metra Railroad near White Marsh as part of a plan to bring railroad traffic into downtown Chicago so that businesses could be established there instead of scattered around various neighborhoods near the tracks. The town quickly grew up around Metra Station with people coming to work on the trains or shopping at local stores while they waited for their turn at the switchback crossings over Fox River which were just outside town limits. By 1865 Shorewood had become an important center for transportation within Cook County due to its location on Metra tracks between downtown Chicago and suburban towns like Maywood and Humboldt Park

Shorewood is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 3,893 at the 2010 census. The community was founded on December 12, 1838 by the marriage of John Shore and Rebecca Hannon. It is located on the east side of Chicago and bordered by Beech Grove to the north, downstate Illinois to the east, and Calumet City to the south. In 1855 Shorewood became part of Chicago Heights neighborhood which also included many other early settlements in Kane County including West Side Settlement (1836), Mountain View (1839), North Side Settlement (1841), South Side Settlement (1846), East Side Settlement (1849), and West Side Settlement (1850). The town was originally named after Isaac Goodyear who donated land for a public school in 1838. Goodyear's grandson opened what is now called Goodyear Park in 1854 as an open-air playground for children of all ages. The park is still used today as a place for picnics and special events. In 1862 when Chicago annexed neighboring townships it included Shorewood in its boundaries creating Shorewood Township which continued to be part of Chicago until 1922 when it became one of four townships within Cook County that were merged into suburban Cook County under then-Governor Richard Molineux. In 1924 shorewood had a population of 2,000 and developed a small industrial base with papermaking being one of their main products until World War II when demand shifted towards munitions plants in nearby Joliett Park due to advances in technology. After the warshorewood experienced rapid growth with new housing developments being built throughout downtown while several small businesses closed or converted to services such as taxi cabs or daycare centers during this time period known as "The Great Migration". As increased traffic conditions began leading to more gridlock along I-90 near McCormick Road in 1960s shorewood began experiencing major problems with some residents moving out while others saw their opportunities increase because they were no longer living near factories but instead closer to shopping areas like Midway Airport or Schaumburg Hills which led to their decline beginning around 1970s through 2000s according during which time few if any new homes were built although there has been recent development along McCormick Road including two high-rise apartments buildings completed recently just beyond its original limits designed proponentily by billionaire Bruce Ratner who owns large blocks adjacent across from original village limits
The town of Shorewood was founded by the Potawatomi Nation in 1812. The town was named after John Shore, a landowner on the Chicago River. The first school in Shorewood was built in 1814. In 1870, the town became a charter city and began to grow rapidly. By 1907, Shorewood had over 10,000 residents and it had its own police department and fire department. In 1916, the city of Chicago annexed Shorewood and most of neighboring Westchester County into its city limits.
