By 1827, there were at least three different types of guns sights being used in Illinois: iron sights, brass or wood sightfinding devices, and black powder pistols with adjustable rear sight. In 1851, Nicholas Ivey patented a design for a gas-operated rifle which featured an adjustable rear sight. This innovation allowed shooters to adjust their aim while firing by adjusting the angle at which they aimed the weapon. The use of adjustable rear sights became more common as guns became more sophisticated over time; however, some rifles still remained using iron sights until 1912. As America grew increasingly competitive in the late 19th century and early 20th century, gunmen began utilizing new firearms technologies like BARs and machineguns in order to achieve greater firepower. As such, Iron Sights continued to be popular among shooters through these years due to their ease of use and versatile capabilities. However, because iron sights are often associated with older handguns and rifles that are no longer manufactured or available on marketplaces today, they may not be well known outside of shooter circles today. Nonetheless, Iron Sights continue to play an important role in firearm history as they remain one of the most versatile sighting devices out there; they allow shooters to maintain accurate fire despite varying weather conditions or terrain encountered during shooting sessions. Since about 1975 small arms manufacturers have begun offering illuminated dot sights for pistols and rifles that allow much finer adjustments than traditional open iron sights; these special illumination sights are also often referred to as "gunsight." One downside is that they require batteries or electronic accessories which can be expensive; however they offer significant advantages over traditional open iron sights when working with handguns and rifles under 6x magnification. Gunsight illumination has become increasingly common with indoor shooting events where shooters must rely primarily upon modern optics instead of older fixed equipment

A three-dot system became common with carbines and machine guns in World War II because it provided more accurate fire while providing cover for troops while theyfired from behind obstacles or dugouts. A four-dot system became popular after World War II because it allowed troops to engage targets at close quarters and also provide greater range when shooting from a elevated position or from inside buildings

In 1827, they founded a community on land that was then part of Watertown Township. In 1834, John Prentice purchased 640 acres (2 km²) in what is now Shorewood from David Sibley for $3 per acre ($/ha). This land became known as “Prentice”s Prairie because it was used for farming until 1886 when it was annexed by Shorewood Township. It remained within township boundaries until 1959 when it became part of Cook County and was annexed into Shorewood Village.
