Sprague opened a general store on the corner of Main Street and First Avenue which became one of the most commonly used stores in Shorewood until it closed its doors in 1984. In 1910, George Waring built his own home on one of the parcels of land that he acquired from Jens Jensen for $5,000 cashmere coats to be worn at fashionable social events such as weddings and balls. Mr. Waring continued to operate his business until it burned down on July 4th of that year while he was away brawling with some friends at an amateur baseball game at Beecher Park across the street from his home; only two items were salvaged (a hatchet and a knife). This event helped spur development around Shorewood with many new homes being erected post-fire including those built by Mrs. Clara Briggs Post who had donated her lot just east of Mr Waring's house back when she still ran her grocery/butter story next door which later became known as Post's Grocery after Mrs Briggs passed away; also numerous other businesses got established during this time including Piggly Wiggly which relocated to Route 66 north of town before closing up shop years ago now serving as an agricultural supplier; Dixie Glass Works located where today's Kohl's operates originally turning out windows for local farmers beginning in the late 1800s before becoming nationally famous for their crystal chandeliers before moving into window production altogether beginning with President Franklin D Roosevelt's inauguration celebration Inauguration Ball there were more than 500 glass manufacturers whirring around downtown making products that can still be seen today looking out over Ford Field through signature ironwork designed By architect Edward Hopper - all without any loss or damage! The post-fire era saw growth rates much higher than what occurred following World War II due largely to Interstate 75 passing through town providing easier access to jobs outside of town while also increasing suburbanization within McHenry County resulting in less demand for locally produced goods once again pushing up prices along with little impact on job opportunities outside of town causing many residents to leave during this time too...the last resident leaving actually occurring just prior to Illinois'hood when Staley Drugs moved into what is now called "The Shoe Store" on State Street opposite Interstate 55 about 2 miles south west of town - giving birth not only to The Mall but also greatly reducing competition within Shorewood retail circles furthering negative feedback loops throughout society resultant in similar outcomes seen today across numerous underserved communities nationwide....

Shorewood is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,797 at the 2010 census. Shorewood was founded in 1837 by Peter shore and his family. It is named after an adjoining body of water called the Des Plaines River. Shorewood is located on the west side of Cook County and can be found adjacent to Chicago on the border of Park Ridge and Lincoln Park. The town is bordered by Stuyvesant Township to the north, Oak Lawn to the east, Westchester Township to the south, and parts of Humboldt Park and Bronzeville neighborhoods to the west. The first settlers in Shorewood were Peter shore's children who left their parents' farm in Essex County, New Jersey for what they thought would be a more advantageous location for agriculture than what they had back home. Once they arrived in Cook County, they set about farming their land which included sections that are now Shorewood as well as portions of Oak Lawn and Lincoln Park today. In 1837, Peter shore married Anna Maria Sacco who came from a prominent family in this area (the Sacco’s had been living here since 1690). Anna Maria was from an excellent family that owned many plantations; her father being one of several landowners who became involved with politics during American independence. Their first house/farmstead was built near present day Elmhurst Avenue/Route 53 where it still stands today as a private home/community center known as “Sacco Manor” operated by Anna Maria's grandson Neil Sacco Jr.. In 1840-1841 some additional families moved intoshoretown including Edward Ahern (a brother-in-law of then Mayor John Fenton) his wife Mina Ahern (niece of General James Shields), John McNamara (brother-in-law of State Senator Jeremiah McMahon), David Walsh (brother-in-law of Congressman Daniel Webster), Michael Noonan (cousin also brother-in-law of then Mayor John Fenton). By 1860 only three families remained: Prentice & Son -owned store on Dearborn Street across from current day Kresge convenience store; Father Ryan -a Catholic priest living on Wacker Drive; Broschi Brothers -owners bakery on Main Street between Kresge Storefront and Green Line tracks.; Shorewoods Post Office opened February 12th 1870 inside Old Shores School building now used as office space for Village Administration Committee.( TodayOld Shores School building houses Village Administration Committee.) This last group settled around what is now Elmhurst Avenue/Route 53 just northwest cornering Dunham Road which served them until shortly before 1914 when acquired by Chicago Housing Authority.(Today Elmhurst Avenue runs along its original course splitting Mrs Davenport road off from it) In 1854 Peter shore purchased 640 acres surrounding what is now Shorewood from Nicholas Biddle(one time owner of bookshelf company Barnes & Noble) through his son Moses Biddle(Moses had inherited 5% interest in Biddle Land Company). This purchase made_shorewood part_of_Cook county~for all intents&purposes! After purchasing 640 acres sand began plowing up topsoil here instead using horses pulling wagons over flatbed carts which caused problems with salt runoff into Des Plaines River soPeter solved this problem by hiring men (& later machines)to harvests salt outhauling it directly to river quagmire without any further damage.- source: History Of Shorewood
