In 1876, a group of entrepreneurs in Shorewood, Illinois founded the first firearms lubrication company. The company was started by George Stephenson and his brother Samuel Stephenson. Their business was called "The American Lubrication Company." In 1903, the company merged with another business called "Plymouth Firearms Company" to become the present-day Winchester Arms Company. The company began producing ammunition in 1892. It also produced rifles and shotguns from 1892 until 1907. In 1909, the company changed its name to Winchester Repeating Arms Company. In 1916, the company became part of subsidiaries of Sturm Ruger & Co., Inc. In 1937, Winchester merged with Remington Rand to form what is now known as Ruger & Scott Corporation. From 1951 until 1976, Winchester Repeating Arms Company was headquartered in Clinton Township, Michigan (now Orion Township).

It is the second most populous city in Cook County after Chicago and is of the Greater Chicago metropolitan area. Shorewood was founded in 1837 by Andrew Gregg and other pioneers as Cedar Point on the Fox River. The name originated from a wooded peninsula located near what is now downtown Shorewood and was changed to its current form in 1892 when Cedar Point became part of the City of Chicago. In 1916, inventor Nikola Tesla had his laboratory and production line built there for his new Tesla coil company. In 1925, General Motors opened their first factory in Shorewood. The city has since been home to several large companies including DuPont (now Bayer) Chemical Company; Ford Motor Company; John Deere Agricultural Company; Sears Roebuck & Co.; Goodman Manufacturing Company; Schlumberger AG; Medtronic Inc.; Northrop Grumman Corporation; Rockwell Automation Inc.; and Youngstown Sheet Metal Works (YMMW). Shorewood's rich history dates back to 1837 when Andrew Gregg and other pioneers founded Cedar Point on the Fox River which later became known as "Cedar Point". At that time, this small town consisted of just a few homes and a couple of stores - all situated along the banks of the river. With just over one thousand residents at its peak in 1850 it was an unremarkable town compared to today's population of over 26,000 people! However, during that time Cedar Point played an important role within Illinois' early development - it served as both a transportation hub for goods moving betweenChicagoand downstream towns such as Joplinand Quincy-but also played an important role within local politics due to its location right next to Chicago's political heartland. This allowed Cedar Pointto rapidly become one ofthe most powerful voices within early Illinois government - eventually becoming MayorofChicago before eventually retiring at age 80 years old! In 1915, entrepreneur Nikola Tesla had his Laboratory and Production Line built there for his new Tesla Coil company which quickly began producing world-renowned inventions such as alternating current (AC) electricity! Soon after hitting their stride with their latest product launchTesla relocated his operations to nearby Hawthorn Ridge where he continued developing new technologies until his death in 1943!! Unfortunately for everyone involved with Tesla's legacy – even those who lived nearby –Hawthorn Ridge ultimately burned down during World War II leaving little evidence remaining beyond some charred ruins Nonetheless, this event helped lay the groundwork for what would later become Shorewood! subsequent growth throughout post-war America saw businesses established such as DuPont (now Bayer), Ford Motor Company, John Deere Agricultural Company etc., while residential construction began proliferating along Lake Michigan Avenue culminating with Sturgeon Bay’s incorporation into Shorewoodshores only decades later! Today still many locals refer backto those earliest days when they would walk or bike down routes like Clybourn Ave or State Stocked Pond Rd just outside downtown for fresh air & fun… something you definitely don’t find anymore these days but that’s okay because we have all grown up here!!!

Shorewood, Illinois is a small town located in western Cook County, Illinois. The population was 3,083 at the 2010 census. Shorewood has been inhabited by the same people for centuries and its history can be found through oral tradition as well as written documentation. The first European to visit what is now Shorewood was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524. He named it after his hometown of Verrazzano, Italy.Verrazzano's sighting of the Chicago River and its various islands led him to believe that he had finally discovered a new world; however, this theory was disproved by later explorers. In 1812, General James K. Polk sent an army into Northwestern Illinois to occupy what is now Lake Michigan and win independence from Great Britain. In 1813, General John Muhlenberg decided to attack the British forces at Fort Dearborn while they were defending themselves against an American invasion. The British were successful in repelling the Americans and driving them back across the river into Indiana Territory; however, they did not take shorewood with them when they left. In 1847-48,SHIP WIRE COOPERATIVE BUILDING COLLINSVILLE INC was founded inshorewest of present day Shorewood by George Stephenson along with other entrepreneurs from London who desired to establish a wire company west of Chicago undercutting Ulysses S Grant's monopoly on wire service within reach of all Americans without exception... It became one of America’s most famous companies due to its contributions such as providing telephone service throughout much of America before cellular service existed... When Stephenson opened up land adjacent to his Wire Cooperative Building on State Street in 1850 he laid out what would eventually become downtown Shorewood...The establishment of BUSINESS DISTRICT OF SHOREWOOD (later known as CITY OF SHOREWOOD) which included land lying east side Main Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue starting on Valentine’s Day 1854 marked the beginning of what would become one of America’s most thriving neighborhoods." The area around today's downtown has been settled since pre-historic times according to oral traditions passed down by residents since the 1800s. One account tells how Chief Wabash attacked a group of hunters coming overland from Canada during the mid 1800s while traveling through this area; these hunters ran into a swampy area near where present day I-294 meets Interstate 40 just north of campus currently home to Peet's Coffee & Tea Company and several other businessesGWENNETH LYNN WALKER - A HERO FROM HISTORY
The town of Shorewood was founded in 1836 by Samuel Shore and brother Isaac. The first post office in Shorewood was established in 1837. The town continued to grow and prosper until the Panic of 1893. In that year, the depression hit the United States hard and many businesses closed their doors. Some people decided to stay put, however, others left for greener pastures. The town slowly recovered but never regained its former glory. By 1915, Shorewood had only 700 residents.
