Shorewood is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, located on the Fox River. The population was 5,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Shorewood is home to Northwestern University and the Shorewood High School football team which has won three state championships in recent years. The land that now makes up Shorewood was first settled by French colonists in 1795. In 1825, a group of Englishmen bought land from the French and named it after Colonel John Shore of Rhode Island. The community grew slowly until around 1870 when construction began on a sawmill on the Fox River. By 1879, there were 100 residents living in shorewood and its mills employed 350 people total. In 1886, Northwestern University moved toshorewood and founded its first school there. In 1898, the railroad arrived and soon created jobs for more people in shorewood as well as many other villages along the river near Northwestern’s campus. In 1907, Congress passed an act providing funding for local schools through appropriations Acts; this led to more students coming to shorewood to attend Northwestern Academy (now known as North Central College) than ever before! In 1959, extensive flooding destroyed most of inland Illinois due to ice storms; however, Shorewoods Sawmill remained standing due to insurance claims! The mill continued operations until 1971 (!), but since then much of what made Shorewoods such an important community has either been lost or destroyed by flood or fire: include its churches (St Bride’s Episcopal Church & Methodist Church are both gone), Its brick courthouse (lost during floods in 2002),And its homes: all but two original structures remain from when shorewood had over 1,000 residents! Today though some parts have definitely taken a beating with post-flood damage including waterlogging inside homes that reach up to 10 feet deep (and counting!), yet somehow everyone here seems willing/able/desperateto make things right againdespite feeling like theyve been hit with a ton of bricks
