It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The community takes its name from one of the first settlers, Samuel Shaw. He arrived in 1851 on what is now State Road 2 south of Shorewood and settled a cabin by the current railroad tracks. By 1870, Shaw had wrung some concessions out of the local government and built himself a log house on what is now First Street (now North Avenue). In 1871 he organized his neighbours into a township under the name of "Shorewood". From its founding until about 1890s, Shorewood functioned as an agricultural center with many small farms located around its central square or "square mile." This period saw dramatic growth as city residents moved away to search for more fertile land near Chicago's industrial centers during what has come to be known as the Great Migration. After World War II destroyed much rural America, however, shorewood lost much of its population and economy due to emigration and decay within itself; today it remains largely rural with only a few scattered businesses downtown. The most recent incarnation of Shorewood began to take form in the late 1970s when new developers bought up abandoned farmland east of town and began developing it into residential properties which would subsequently become open-air shopping malls that anchored several interstate highways passing through town (I-55/I-290/US 6). At first these projects were successful but after several years they petered out due to high development costs associated with their location close to major highways (and other commercial areas) while also providing little economic value toshorewamhich generally declined thereafter until being replaced by newer developments around 2006 when I-294 opened up adjacent districts northwest and northeast of town which provided new jobs opportunities for locals while also increasing beach access across Lake Michigan

Shorewood is a small town in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. The population was 3,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settlers in Shorewood were Abram and Anna Shriver, who started the business of drovelling coal out of the ground in 1837. In 1840 they built a log cabin on what is now State Street. They named their property Shorewood after the wooded hills that surrounded it on three sides. In 1846 Abraham Lincoln visited Shorewood while campaigning for president and stopped to speak with some of the local farmers and merchants. He later donated land to build a school and post office there. The first school building was completed in 1852 and named after Mr. and Mrs. Lincoln’s daughter Mary Todd Lincoln (1819-1879). In 1870 John Pritzker founded his grocery store at 5100 Niles Avenue in Shorewood by landing an advertisement in a newspaper for groceries that could be sold only by white citizens because he wanted to provide affordable access to food for black residents living near Chicago proper during Reconstruction. Pritzker would later become one of the largest purchasers of food items from suppliers within miles of Chicago proper as well as becoming known for his contributions to civic life in Shorewood as well as throughout DuPage County during his lifetime including serving on several city councils, being elected mayor three times (1948-1951-1954), chairing both houses of the county board from 1951 until his death,and helping found two high schools - West Side High School (now Northwestern High School) and North Side High School - which are now both defunct academies charters enrolling students through middle/junior high schools rather than full-time universities or colleges
The town of Shorewood was founded in 1846 by a group of settlers who journeyed from the towns of Peoria and Chicago. The town grew rapidly, and by 1871 it had a population of over 1,500 people. By 1907, Shorewood had become an important industrial center in Illinois, with factories such as Armoury & Rubber Company, John Deere Company, and Singer Sewing Machine Company operating there. In the 1920s, Shorewood was hit hard by the Great Depression, but slowly began to recover thanks to its strong community economy. In 1970, Shorewood became part of the city of Peoria proper.
