During various times over its history, Shorewood has been known for its agricultural products such as hay, potatoes, apples (orchards are now a mainstay), cheese, lumber and other items.Today's economy is based largely on services: government employment (principally police and fire services), retail trade (largely insurance) and professional/technical workforces in information technology and engineering consulting firms. Manufacturing still accounts for a significant share of production but this has declined markedly since 2000 when exports to countries such as China reached levels not seen since before World War II

The community was founded by farmers who desired to get away from Chicago, and it soon became a major agricultural center. Shorewood has always been a lightly populated place, with only around 100 people living there at its peak in the 1920s. However, over time, the population exploded due to the growth of agriculture and other businesses in the area. Today, Shorewood retains a largely rural character, with most of its residents working in nearby towns or villages. The history of Shorewood goes back to 1836, when settlers arrived in what is now Shorewood from parts of eastern Michigan and Indiana. The original founders were farmers who wanted to get away from Chicago because they felt that city life was too noisy and polluted. Although Chicago had become an important regional center during this time, the farmers decided that they would rather live closer to their families and friends instead of remaining in one place for very long periods of time. In fact, many of these early settlers returned home after just a few years in Illinois because they felt that life here wasn’t as challenging as it was back east. Over time, however, things changed at Shorewood pretty quickly. A series of accidents started makingroads into farmlands west of downtown – which became known as “the white plague” due to how often death rates soared among those living near farms that were contaminated with disease-carrying animals (eccentricity also played a role here). By 1850, some locals were so concerned about this situation that they formed a group called “The Mechanics League” to try and improve safety on local roadsides while still allowing farming operations to take place unimpeded. This group succeeded somewhat; but even though road improvements did help reduce mortality rates overall within the town limits over time (thankfully not until after World War II), many members eventually left due to economic reasons or simply because life didn’t seem as exciting anymore outside of town limits! It wasn’t until about 1870 that shorewood began developing into what it is today – an agricultural hub located on both sides of Route 66 (which then connected Illinois with Iowa). At this point in history, land values within shorewood skyrocketed thanks to increased production from corn and other crops grown on land neighboring farmland dating back centuries ago! Initially consisting mostlyof single-family homes (and sometimes having several stories!), throughout most OF these yearsshore wood enjoyed relatively low levels Of crime compared To more established communities nearby such as Wheaton or Decatur! However starting around WWI things beganto change…crime rates rapidly escalated inside & outsideof townlimits!!! Many people relocated out there becausethey didnt wanta peaceable neighborhood thats constantly being violated!!!! Nowadays you can find alotOf Gangsters & MurderersLivingInTown Limits!!!!!!!!!!!!!
