In 1870 he donated some land to the city for use as an open-air park called "Prentice Park". During World War II many residents left to fight in Europe or other countries but some returned and built homes here afterwards; among these were Admiral Chester Nimitz and Admiral William Halsey (commander Red Sea Fleet). After 1945 most residents left again except for a few who bought homes after retirements from service or when businesses closed down. One resident kept his home through all eight rounds of fire that hit town during World War II; it still stands today as a reminder that not all pioneer values have been abandoned here.]

The first businesses in Shorewood were a mill and a tannery. In 1847, the town had a population of just 10 people. However, over time, it grew rapidly, becoming one of the larger towns in Cook County by 1860. By 1870, shorewood had a total population of 125 people and it remained an important center for trade up until the early 20th century. Shorewood was chartered as a village on December 1st, 1892. On November 16th of that year, voters approved incorporation into the City of Chicago with a population of 2,500 residents. After years of struggle and lobbying from Mayor Edward Jenssen and other city officials, Shorewood became one of the first villages to be merged into Chicago proper on October 15th 1904 with a population of 7600 residents!
